Deep eutectic solvent (DES) affinities with cellular membranes structures dictate the degree of cytotoxicity that results from these interactions. The physicochemical properties of choline chloride (ChCl)-DESs suggest non-negligible cytotoxicities that were attested by published researches. In this study, the profiles of novel ,-diethylammonium chloride (DAC)-based-deep eutectic solvents (DESs) prepared with various hydrogen bond donors (urea, glycerol, ethylene glycol, malonic acid, and zinc chloride) were compared to those of ChCl-DESs by using HelaS3, AGS, MCF-7, and WRL-68 cancer cell lines. The molecular interactions between salts and cellular membranes were investigated to explain the observed cytotoxicity. The results show that ChCl-based DESs (279 ≤ IC ≥ 1260 mM) were less toxic than DAC-based DESs (37 ≤ IC ≥ 109 mM). COSMO-RS analysis emphasized the importance of salt hydrophobicity with regards to DESs cytotoxicity. Malonic acid increased hydrophobicity and cytotoxicity in general, thus highlighting the potential of ammonium salt-based DESs as anticancer agents.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based conductive hydrogels have attracted great interest in the building of flexible electronic devices that can be used to replace conventional temperature-intolerant hydrogels and expensive ionic liquid gels. However, current DES-based conductive hydrogels obtained have limited mechanical strength, high hysteresis, and poor microdeformation sensitivity of the assembled sensors. In this work, a rubber-like conductive hydrogel based on -acryloylglycinamide (NAGA) and DES (acetylcholine chloride/acrylamide) has been synthesized by a one-step method.

Innovative packaging materials are essential for preserving food, serving as a substitute for petroleum-based options. In this study, biofilms consisting of pullulan and gellan gum which incorporates astaxanthin nanoemulsion were prepared to extend the shelf-life of strawberries. Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DES) were used as solvents to extract natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis.

Laboratório de Extração, Termodinâmica Aplicada e Equilíbrio - EXTRAE, Faculdade de Engenharia de Alimentos, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Rua Monteiro Lobato,80, 13083-062 Campinas, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Soy extract waste, okara, is a rich source of bioactive compounds such as isoflavones, which are phytoestrogens with potential health benefits. To develop a green approach to recovering these compounds and valorizing okara, a study was developed to screen variables for the extraction of isoflavones from okara and soybean (for comparison) using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) composed with choline chloride ([Ch]Cl) and acetic acid (AA) ([Ch]Cl: AA, 1:2). A fractional design (2) was used to evaluate variables in the extraction of isoflavones, followed by a Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD).

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are eco-friendly leaching agents which have emerged as potential candidate for recovery of valuable metals from spent LIBs (lithium-ion batteries). Earlier reports show use of more mount of chemicals, long leaching duration and less efficiency. The present work has been carried out to observe the leaching efficiency of two DES-water blend systems such as ChCl:CA(2:1) +30% HO and ChCl:MA(1:1)+20% HO for the leaching of Li and Co from cathodic material of spent LIBs using design of experiments and optimization through CCD (central composite design) of Response surface methodology(RSM) approach.

n-Alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-based deep eutectic solvent (DESs) has potential in the efficient delignification and utilization of carbohydrates in biomass. In this research, DESs containing Brønsted acid and Lewis acid were prepared with CTAB (alkyl-chain length 12-18), organic acids and metal chlorides, and the optimal treatment conditions were acquired by pretreatment optimization. Through the pretreatment with TTAB/LCA/Fe (1:4:0.
