Chlorophylls a and b (Chl a and b) are involved in light harvesting, photochemical reactions, and electron transfer reactions in plants and green algae. The core complexes of the photosystems (PSI and PSII) associate with Chl a, while the peripheral antenna complexes (LHCI and LHCII) bind Chls a and b. One of the final steps of Chl biosynthesis is the conversion of geranylgeranylated Chls (Chls) to phytylated Chls by geranylgeranyl reductase (GGR).

Pleuromamma (Giesbrecht, 1898) is a cosmopolitan genus of metridinid copepods, with species that perform remarkable diel vertical migrations (DVM) and emit a bioluminescent secretion when disturbed that varies both spectrally and kinetically. Copepod bioluminescence is autogenic and uses luciferase enzymes that catalyze a luciferin, coelenterazine, to produce light. Pleuromamma possess naupliar eyes, relatively simple photosensitive structures used for many visually-guided behaviors.

During photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed, including hydrogen peroxide (HO) and singlet oxygen (O), which have putative roles in signalling, but their involvement in photosynthetic acclimation is unclear. Due to extreme reactivity and a short lifetime, O signalling occurs via its reaction products, such as oxidised poly-unsaturated fatty acids in thylakoid membranes. The resulting lipid peroxides decay to various aldehydes and reactive electrophile species (RES).

Riboflavin (RF) serves as a precursor to flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide, which are crucial cofactors in various metabolic processes. Strict regulation of cellular flavin homeostasis is imperative, yet information regarding the factors governing this regulation remains largely elusive. In this study, we first examined the impact of external flavin treatment on the Arabidopsis transcriptome to identify novel regulators of cellular flavin levels.

The riboflavin analogues, roseoflavin and 8-aminoriboflavin, inhibit malaria parasite proliferation by targeting riboflavin utilization. To determine their mechanism of action, we generated roseoflavin-resistant parasites by in vitro evolution. Relative to wild-type, these parasites were 4-fold resistant to roseoflavin and cross-resistant to 8-aminoriboflavin.
