Background: Positive fluid balance (FB) in the intensive care unit (ICU) may be a marker for increased venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. We hypothesized that an early positive fluid balance (FB) would be associated with increased VTE occurrence.
Methods: A single-center retrospective review of surgical ICU patients was conducted from May 2011 to December 2014. Patients with a VTE were compared to those who did not develop a VTE (NVTE).
Results: There were 619 patients analyzed with 77 (12.4%) diagnosed with a VTE; these patients had longer ventilator days (12.3 vs. 5.0 days, p < 0.01) and ICU stays (10.3 vs. 6.4 days, p < 0.01), and were more likely to have a net FB ≥ 4L over the first three days (62% vs. 44%, p < 0.01). A FB ≥ 4L over the first three ICU days was an independent predictor of VTE (AOR 1.74, p = 0.04).
Conclusion: Patients with an early positive FB are more likely to develop a VTE.

Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a challenging complication of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis using next-generation sequencing (NGS) offers insights into resistance mechanisms and potential treatment strategies. We conducted a study from February 2022 to April 2023 involving patients from five hospitals in Taiwan who had recurrent or advanced NSCLC with LM.

Background: In acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients, Talaromyces marneffei infections are mostly disseminated and may involve the skin, mucosa, respiratory system, digestive system, lymphatic system, and as some reports indicate, the nervous system. Mp1p, a cell wall-specific polysaccharide in Talaromyces marneffei, is used for laboratory diagnosis of Talaromyces marneffei in blood and urine samples. However, Cerebrospinal fluid Mp1p diagnosis of Talaromyces marneffei central nervous system infection has not been reported.

Knee osteoarthritis contributes substantially to worldwide disability. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) develops secondary to joint injury, such as ligament rupture, and there is increasing evidence suggesting a key role for inflammation in the aetiology of PTOA and associated functional deficits. Colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1-R) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal degeneration following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Background: In septic shock, the classic fluid resuscitation strategy can lead to a potentially harmful positive fluid balance. This multicenter, randomized, single-blind, parallel, controlled pilot study assessed the effectiveness of a restrictive fluid strategy aiming to limit daily volume.
Methods: Patients 18-85 years' old admitted to the ICU department of three French hospitals were eligible for inclusion if they had septic shock and were in the first 24 h of vasopressor infusion.

Objective: Early diagnosis and treatment of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARE) are crucial for a favorable prognosis. Detecting the causative autoantibodies can be challenging. Probable diagnostic criteria are useful in adults less so in children.
