The porous carbon (bacterial cellulose (BC)-activated carbon (AC)(BA)) prepared via two-step activation of bacterial nanocellulose by treatments with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and then phosphoric acid (HPO) solutions showed superior adsorption properties and effective performance as catalyst support. BC-AC(BA) had an open and interconnected multi-porous structure, consisting of micropores (0.23 cm/g), mesopores (0.26 cm/g), and macropores (4.40 cm/g). The BET surface area and porosity were 833 m/g and 91.2%, respectively. The methylene blue adsorption test demonstrated that BC-AC(BA) was superior in its mass transfer rate and adsorption capacities. Moreover, BC-AC(BA) modified by HPO treatment showed a significant enhancement of catalytic performance for dehydration of ethanol. At the reaction temperature of 250-400 °C, 30P/BC-AC(BA) gave ethanol conversion at 88.4-100%, with ethylene selectivity of 82.6-100%, whereas, high selectivity for diethyl ether (DEE) at 75.2%, at ethanol conversion of 60.1%, was obtained at the reaction temperature of 200 °C.

Tracheal mucosal keratosis: Case discussion and literature review.

Chron Respir Dis

January 2025

Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

A 57-year-old female presented with a chief complaint of cough, with productive yellow sputum particularly severe in the morning. Bronchoscopy revealed inflammatory changes in both main bronchi, with abundant white purulent secretions and necrotic material adhering to the luminal surface. Histopathological examination showed chronic inflammatory changes in the mucosal tissue, with mild hyperplasia of the local squamous epithelium and evidence of keratinization in the surrounding area, consistent with a diagnosis of tracheal mucosal keratosis.

Trophic ecology in an anchialine cave: A stable isotope study.

The analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) has been widely used in ecology since it allows to identify the circulation of energy in a trophic network. The anchialine ecosystem is one of the less explored aquatic ecosystems in the world and stable isotope analysis represents a useful tool to identify the routes through which energy flows and to define the trophic niches of species. Sampling and data recording was conducted in one anchialine cave, Cenote Vaca Ha, near the town of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, where seven stygobitic species endemic to the anchialine caves of the Yucatan Peninsula, plus sediment, water and vegetation samples were analyzed to determine what the main nutrient sources are.

The major limiting factor of photosynthesis in C3 plants is the enzyme, rubisco which inadequately distinguishes between carbon dioxide and oxygen. To overcome catalytic deficiencies of Rubisco, cyanobacteria utilize advanced protein microcompartments, called the carboxysomes which envelopes the enzymes, Rubisco and Carbonic Anhydrase (CA). These microcompartments facilitate the diffusion of bicarbonate ions which are converted to CO by CA, following in an increase in carbon flux near Rubisco boosting CO fixation process.

This study focuses on the fabrication and characterisation of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) buckypapers and polyethersulfone (PES) flat-sheet membranes using Cyrene, aiming toevaluate its efficacy as a green solvent for these applications. Pristine SWCNTs were dispersed inCyrene without surfactants and compared to N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) dispersions. Buckypapers were fabricated from these dispersions and characterised using Scanning ElectronMicroscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy.

Methyl ketones, key building blocks widely used in diverse industrial applications, largely depend on oil-derived chemical methods for their production. Here, we investigated biobased production alternatives for short-chain ketones, adapting the solvent-tolerant soil bacterium as a host for ketone biosynthesis either by whole-cell biocatalysis or using engineered minicells, chromosome-free bacterial vesicles. Organic acids (acetate, propanoate and butanoate) were selected as the main carbon substrate to drive the biosynthesis of acetone, butanone and 2-pentanone.
