Engineering Programmable Electroactive Living Materials for Highly Efficient Uranium Capture and Accumulation.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Urban Pollutant Conversion, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China.

Uranium is the primary fuel for nuclear energy, critical for sustainable, carbon-neutral energy transitions. However, limited terrestrial resources and environmental risks from uranium contamination require innovative immobilization and recovery solutions. In this work, we present a novel uranium recovery method using programmable electroactive living materials (ELMs).

Problem And Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was substantial reconfiguration of maternity care services, affecting both users and healthcare providers (HCPs), in the United Kingdom (UK) and globally.

Aim: To further our understanding of the impact of maternity service reconfigurations in the UK, from the perspective of maternity HCPs.

Methods: Scopus, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and the Cochrane COVID Study Register were searched for relevant studies reporting qualitative data from the UK, published in English between 01 June 2021 and 30 September 2023.

Large-scale brain network function is critical for healthy cognition, yet links between such network function, neurochemistry, and smaller-scale neurocircuitry are unclear. Here, we evaluated 59 healthy individuals using resting-state fMRI to determine how network-level temporal dynamics were impacted by two well-characterized pharmacotherapies targeting catecholamines: methylphenidate (20 mg) and haloperidol (2 mg)-administered via randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Network temporal dynamic changes were tested for links with drug-induced alterations in complex corticostriatal connections as this circuit is a primary site of action for both drugs.

During their final transformation, insects emerge from the pupal case and deploy their wings within minutes. The wings deploy from a compact origami structure, to form a planar and rigid blade that allows the insect to fly. Deployment is powered by a rapid increase in internal pressure, and by the subsequent flow of hemolymph into the deployable wing structure.

Transformer-based technology has attracted widespread attention in medical image segmentation. Due to the diversity of organs, effective modelling of multi-scale information and establishing long-range dependencies between pixels are crucial for successful medical image segmentation. However, most studies rely on a fixed single-scale window for modeling, which ignores the potential impact of window size on performance.
