Purpose: To map and synthesise research evidence of the effects that aided and unaided AAC interventions have on the receptive language of children with developmental disabilities.
Method: This scoping review used a four-pronged search strategy (electronic databases, dissertations and theses, hand search, ancestry searches) to identify germane studies. A total of 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies were described in terms of the number of participants, participant characteristics, research design, AAC interventions, intervention outcomes, intervention effects, and quality appraisal.
Result: The review revealed positive associations between aided and unaided AAC, vocabulary acquisition and symbol comprehension.
Conclusion: AAC interventions may have merit for the development of receptive language skills in children with developmental disabilities. Specific gaps in relation to unaided AAC, aided augmented input strategies, morphological and syntax development, and discourse comprehension are highlighted.

Individuals with "agrammatic" receptive aphasia have long been known to rely on semantic plausibility rather than syntactic cues when interpreting sentences. In contrast to early interpretations of this pattern as indicative of a deficit in syntactic knowledge, a recent proposal views agrammatic comprehension as a case of "noisy-channel" language processing with an increased expectation of noise in the input relative to healthy adults. Here, we investigate the nature of the noise model in aphasia and whether it is adapted to the statistics of the environment.

Language comprehension is an essential component of human development that is associated not only with expressive language development and knowledge acquisition, but also with social inclusion, mental health, and quality of life. For deaf and hard-of-hearing adults with intellectual disability, there is a paucity of measures of receptive sign language skills, although these are a prerequisite for individualized planning and evaluation of intervention. Assessments require materials and procedures that are accurate, feasible, and suitable for low levels of functioning.

Critical thinking, which is a productive language skill, provides a framework for these two receptive language skills and enables the evaluation of the accuracy of information accessed through critical listening and critical reading, analyzing different perspectives and making inferences to reach correct conclusions.
