Contemporary practice has started to rethink use of outdoor and community environments for advancing comprehensive rehabilitation outcomes. The aim is to examine health professionals' experiences and perceptions of providing rehabilitation in outdoor community settings. The purpose is to use these experiences to generate practice-based knowledge in using the outdoors as a means to guide community-based rehabilitation. The Interpretive Description methodology was accompanied by social practice theory. Fieldwork was conducted utilizing participant observation, photovoice, and focus-group interviews. Included were 27 health professionals. The analysis revealed how "naturalistic learning opportunities" offered health professionals strategies to empower activity and participation levels and yet invoked "rehabilitation setting tensions." A continuum was engaged in the theme "navigating a middle ground," representing an integrated environment approach; rehabilitation in conventional indoor and outdoor community settings. Development of a sustainable concept for outdoor community-based rehabilitation involves strengthening health professionals' competencies and skills for providing outdoor and community work.

To reduce opioid-related morbidity and mortality, local coalitions on substance use prevention in Kern County, California, have sought to increase equitable engagement and reengagement with harm reduction supplies, including naloxone. Through a community-academic partnership and funding from the local managed health care plan in Kern County, we ordered, stocked, and monitored a temperature-controlled outdoor harm reduction vending machine (HRVM) in Bakersfield, California. We outlined the necessary steps for successful procurement and implementation of community-based HRVMs.

Chimpanzees excel at inference tasks which require that they search for a single food item from partial information. Yet, when presented with 2-item tasks which test the same inference operation, chimpanzees show a consistent breakdown in performance. Here we test a diverse zoo-housed cohort (n = 24) comprising all 4 great ape species under the classic 4-cup 2-item task, previously administered to children and chimpanzees, and a modified task administered to baboons.

Outdoor microcosms, metabarcoding with next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene, total body score (TBS) and physicochemical analyses were used to monitor Mus musculus decomposition aboveground (A) and in the subsurface (S), and compared to soil-only controls (C). The microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process shows potential for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment, yet its application in wastewater treatment plants remains underexplored. This study attempted to use a continuous-flow raceway reactor to treat real municipal wastewater using the MBGS process.
