The porous Ba(BO) framework of the so-called "antizeolite" borates with channels along the axis is capable of accommodating various guest anionic groups, e.g. [BO], [F], [F], and [(Li,Na)F]. Taking as an example the Ba(BO)[BO][LiF] crystal, we put forward the argument that the optical properties of "antizeolite" borates are strongly influenced by the degree of channel packing with anionic groups and, correspondingly, by the conjugated intrinsic defects. With the use of optical, electron-spin resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and ab initio calculations, it was shown that intrinsic defects largely impact the absorption of light in the visible and UV regions (the color of the bulk crystals can change from colorless to dark brown), absorption-edge position, dichroism, and other optical properties. The change in the optical absorption in the visible range is caused by the appearance of new states in the electronic structure inside the band gap, which are associated mainly with the presence of single and double F centers-fluorine vacancies that capture electrons-in [□F], [F], and [LiF] groups. The formation of F centers in the [F] group is the most energetically favorable. It has been found that Ba(BO)[BO][LiF] crystals are optically active gyrotropic with an isotropic point at 499 nm at 300 K and are of interest for practical application as narrow-band light filters.

Porous carbon adsorption represents a critical component of CCUS technologies, with microporous structures playing an essential role in CO capture. The preparation of porous carbon introduces intrinsic defects, making it essential to consider both pore size and these defects for a comprehensive understanding of the CO adsorption mechanism. This study investigates the mechanisms of CO adsorption influenced by intrinsic defects and pore size using multiscale methods, incorporating experimental validation, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and Density Functional Theory simulations.

Due to intrinsic defects in blue-light-emitting perovskite materials, the charge carriers are prone to being trapped by the trap states. Therefore, the preparation of efficient blue-light-emitting perovskite materials remains a significant challenge. Herein, CsPb(Cl/Br) nanocrystal (NCs)@SiO structures were fabricated through hydrolyzing (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTS).

Two-dimensional (2D) β-TeO has gained attention as a promising material for optoelectronic and power device applications, thanks to its transparency and high hole mobility. However, the mechanisms driving its -type conductivity and dopability remain elusive. In this study, we investigate the intrinsic and extrinsic point defects in monolayer and bilayer β-TeO, the latter of which has been experimentally synthesized, using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) + D3 hybrid functional.

Oral administration of astaxanthin mitigates chronological skin aging in mice.

Biosci Biotechnol Biochem

December 2024

Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan.

Intrinsic skin aging is a chronological decline in skin texture and function influenced largely by genetic factors. Aged skin exhibits morphological alterations, including wrinkling, dryness, and roughness, along with dysfunctional changes in the skin barrier. In this study, the in vivo anti-intrinsic aging efficacy of dietary astaxanthin extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis on the skin was evaluated using aged C57BL/6 J mice.

Introduction: Copy-number (CN) loss of chromosome 9p, or parts thereof, impair immune response and confer ICT resistance by direct elimination of immune-regulatory genes on this arm, notably IFNγ genes at 9p24.1, and type-I interferon (IFN-I) genes at 9p21.3.
