Redox-Active Carboranyl Diphosphine as an Electron and Proton Transfer Agent.

Inorg Chem

July 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of South Carolina, 631 Sumter St, Columbia, South Carolina 29208, United States.

In this work, we report the first example of the PCET reactivity for a boron cluster compound, the zwitterionic -carboranyl diphosphonium derivative 7-P(H)Bu-10-P(H)Pr--CBH. This main-group reagent efficiently transfers two electrons and two protons to quinones to yield hydroquinones and regenerate a neutral -carboranyl diphosphine, 1-PBu-2-PPr--CBH. As we have previously reported the conversion of this -carboranyl diphosphine into the zwitterionic derivative upon reaction with main group hydrides, the transformation reported herein represents a complete synthetic cycle for the metal-free reduction of quinones, with the redox-active carboranyl diphosphine scaffold acting as a mediator.

Preparation and Evaluation of Nanoemulsion Formulation Containing Kojic Acid and Kojyl 3-aminopropylphosphonic Acid.

Curr Pharm Biotechnol

July 2024

Department of Cosmetic Science, Providence University, 200, Sec. 7, Taiwan Boulevard, Shalu Dist., Taichung 43301, Taiwan.

Background: The kojyl 3-aminopropylphosphonic acid (KAP) was synthesized by kojic acid (KA) with a 3-aminopropylphosphonic acid. Which is more stable than KA and showed better skin penetration and anti-pigmentation efficacy in melanocytes. However, up till now, there have been no studies aimed at incorporating KAP into an emulsion system and evaluating its effectiveness.

Melasma: A Step-by-Step Approach Towards a Multimodal Combination Therapy.

Clin Cosmet Investig Dermatol

May 2024

Hautzentrum Köln/Cologne Dermatology, Cologne, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Melasma is a skin condition that causes dark patches on the skin and can make people feel upset about their appearance.
  • Treating melasma is tricky because it can come back and is affected by things like sun exposure and hormones.
  • A good treatment plan includes protecting the skin from the sun, using special creams to reduce dark spots, and sometimes doing procedures like laser treatments or chemical peels to help clear the skin.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) physical cryogels that contained the additives of -, -, and -bis-phenols or phenol were prepared, and their physico-chemical characteristics and macroporous morphology and the solute release dynamics were evaluated. These phenolic additives caused changes in the viscosity of initial PVA solutions before their freeze-thaw processing and facilitated the growth in the rigidity of the resultant cryogels, while their heat endurance decreased. The magnitude of the effects depended on the interposition of phenolic hydroxyls in the molecules of the used additives and was stipulated by their H-bonding with PVA OH-groups.

Here we discuss fluorescent properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) interacting with the membranes of red blood cells. We report the results of spectroscopic, microscopic, and photon-counting measurements of the GQDs in different surroundings for uncovering specific features of the GQD fluorescence, and describe two observed phenomena important for implementation of the GQDs as fluorescent labels and agents for drug delivery. Firstly, the GQDs can suffer from photodegradation but also can be stabilized in the presence of antioxidants (reduced glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, or 1,4-hydroquinone).
