The tripeptide NH-Gly-His-Lys-COOH (GHK), -urocanic acid (-UCA) and Cu(II) ions are physiological constituents of the human body and they co-occur (e.g., in the skin and the plasma). While GHK is known as Cu(II)-binding molecule, we found that urocanic acid also coordinates Cu(II) ions. Furthermore, both ligands create ternary Cu(II) complex being probably physiologically functional species. Regarding the natural concentrations of the studied molecules in some human tissues, together with the affinities reported here, we conclude that the ternary complex [GHK][Cu(II)][-urocanic acid] may be partly responsible for biological effects of GHK and urocanic acid described in the literature.

Deferasirox (Def), an orally administered iron-chelating drug, has drawn significant interest in repurposing for anticancer application due to the elevated Fe demand by cancer cells. But there are also concerns about its severe off target health effects. Herein Cu(II) binding is studied as a potential off target interaction.

Biochars prepared at 300-700 °C were functionalized with amidoxime groups to evaluate their selective adsorptive removal capabilities towards Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The results show that the amidoxime modification significantly enhanced the the Cu(II) adsorption capacity of the biochar prepared at 300 °C (AOBC300) by 1.6 times, reaching 0.

Continuing our search for metal drugs with markedly higher toxicity to cancer cells than to normal cells, we evaluated the effect of 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) as a co-ligand in the compounds [Cu(μ-O,O'-NO)(L-Arg)(bpy)]NO} (1) and [CuCl(L-Arg)(bpy)]Cl·3HO (2) (L-Arg = L-arginine), on DNA interaction, cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity, compared to the effects induced by other co-ligands i.e. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and SCN ions, in similar Cu(II) compounds we have studied previously.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that often co-occur with heavy metals. Despite their prevalence, the mobility of PFAS in complex, multicomponent systems, particularly at the molecular scale, remains poorly understood. The vast diversity of PFAS and their low concentrations alongside anthropogenic and natural substances underscore the need for integrating mechanistic insights into the sorption models.

The isolation and analysis of chiral isomers are critical parts of the drug development process to ensure effective and safe drug administration to patients. Indirect chiral ligand exchange chromatography (ICLEC) was developed to separate and determine tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) and its diastereoisomer GS-7339, with a hypothesized separation mechanism. The effect of using a chiral column a standard C18 column on the separation of the TAF chiral isomer mixture was investigated.
