Objectives: Non-invasive venous waveform analysis (NIVA) is a recently described, novel technique to assess intravascular volume status. Waveforms are captured with a piezoelectric sensor; analysis in the frequency domain allows for calculation of a "NIVA value" that represents volume status. The aim of this report was to determine the effects of vasoactive agents on the venous waveform and calculated NIVA values.
Design: Porcine experimental model.
Setting: Operating theatre.
Participants: A piezoelectric sensor was secured over the surgically exposed saphenous vein in eight anesthetized pigs.
Main Outcome Measures: NIVA value, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP), and mean arterial pressure prior to and post intravenous administration of 150-180 µg of phenylephrine or 100 µg of sodium nitroprusside.
Results: Phenylephrine led to a decrease in NIVA value (mean 9.2 vs. 4.6, < 0.05), while sodium nitroprusside led to an increase in NIVA value (mean 9.5 vs. 11.9, < 0.05). Mean arterial pressure increased after phenylephrine ( < 0.05) and decreased after sodium nitroprusside ( < 0.05). PCWP did not change significantly after phenylephrine ( = 0.25) or sodium nitroprusside ( = 0.06).
Conclusions: Vasoactive agents lead to changes in non-invasively obtained venous waveforms in euvolemic pigs, highlighting a potential limitation in the ability to NIVA to estimate static volume in this setting. Further studies are indicated to understand the effects of vasoactive agents in the setting of hypovolemia and hypervolemia.

Objective: To investigate the current status and influencing factors of feeding intolerance (FI) during enteral nutrition (EN) in intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted, including patients from two ICU wards of a tertiary hospital in Guizhou Province from July 2019 to December 2022. Clinical data were collected using a self-designed data collection form, including general information [age, gender, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II)], clinical treatment (mechanical ventilation, mild hypothermia therapy), medication use (vasoactive drugs, glucocorticoids, analgesics, sedatives), EN implementation (types of EN fluids, EN methods, tube feeding rate), EN tolerance, and blood glucose status.

Objectives: Postoperative complications after major surgery, especially in vascular procedures, are associated with a significant increase in costs and mortality. Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) have a notable impact on morbidity and mortality. The primary aim of this present study was to evaluate the effects of spinal anesthesia compared with general anesthesia on the incidence of PPCs in patients undergoing lower extremity bypass surgery.

Introduction: This study explored the effects of prenatal exposure to fumonisins B (FB) on bone innervation in newborn Wistar rats.
Material And Methods: Pregnant dams (n = 6 per group) were assigned to either the control or one of two FB-exposed groups (60 mg or 90 mg/kg body weight) from the 7 day of gestation until parturition. On the day of parturition, one male pup from each litter (n = 6 per group) was randomly selected and euthanised, and their femurs were dissected for analysis.

Objective: To describe the 12-month mortality of Dutch COVID-19 intensive care unit patients, the total COVID-19 population and various subgroups on the basis of the number of comorbidities, age, sex, mechanical ventilation, and vasoactive medication use.
Methods: We included all patients admitted with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020, and March 29, 2022, from the Dutch National Intensive Care (NICE) database. The crude 12-month mortality rate is presented via Kaplan-Meier survival curves for each patient subgroup.

Fatty acid metabolism, exercise, and insulin action play critical roles in maintaining vascular health, especially relevant in metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Insulin, a vasoactive hormone, induces arterial vasodilation throughout the arterial tree, increasing arterial compliance and enhancing tissue perfusion. These effects, however, are impaired in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes, and evidence suggests that vascular insulin resistance contributes to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and its cardiovascular complications.
