Background: A recent infection testing algorithm (RITA) incorporating case surveillance (CS) with the rapid test for recent HIV infection (RTRI) was integrated into HIV testing services in Thailand as a small-scale pilot project in October 2020.

Objective: We aimed to describe the lessons learned and initial outcomes obtained after the establishment of the nationwide recent HIV infection surveillance project from April through August 2022.

Methods: We conducted desk reviews, developed a surveillance protocol and manual, selected sites, trained staff, implemented surveillance, and analyzed outcomes.

A likelihood approach to incorporating self-report data in HIV recency classification.

Department of Statistics, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802, United States.

Estimating new HIV infections is significant yet challenging due to the difficulty in distinguishing between recent and long-term infections. We demonstrate that HIV recency status (recent versus long-term) could be determined from self-report testing history and biomarkers, which are increasingly available in bio-behavioral surveys. HIV recency status is partially observed, given the self-report testing history.

Introduction: Decentralized COVID-19 testing with antigen rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDT) is recommended by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control for community-level services. These services have been provided in Primary Healthcare Centers, Community Pharmacies, and licensed "Patent Medicine Stores" that serve the least affluent communities. To support quality assurance, we applied an adapted version of SPI-RT (Stepwise Process for Improving the Quality of HIV Rapid and Recency Testing) to sites providing COVID-19-RDTs in Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.

Article Synopsis
  • * Between October 2021 and January 2023, nearly 25,000 FSWs were tested, with 9.5% testing positive for HIV; of those, 11.7% were recently infected, demonstrating significant incidence.
  • * The findings indicated that despite some regional variations, RITA could effectively be integrated into existing programs, without a notable difference in positivity rates between different contact testing methods (social vs. sexual).

Background: We developed the HIV Triplex multiplex bead assay to identify and serotype HIV infection with high sensitivity and specificity; and distinguish recent from long-term HIV-1 infections. It can facilitate accurate incidence estimation, while reducing the number of tests and blood collected, which is highly desirable for use in future studies and surveys. Using previously collected, treatment-naive longitudinal seroconversion HIV-1 positive panels and specimens from individuals infected for >12 months, we determined the assay's mean duration of recent infection (MDRI) and false-recency rate (FRR) respectively, at various mean fluorescent intensity (MFI) cutoffs.
