Removal of bacteria from the blood by means of extracorporeal techniques has been attempted for decades. In late 2019, the European Union licensed the first ever haemoperfusion device for removal of bacteria from the blood. The active ingredient of Seraph 100 Microbind Affinity Blood Filter is ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene beads with endpoint-attached heparin. Bacteria have been shown to bind to heparin as they would usually do to the heparan sulfate on the cell surface, thereby being removed from the blood stream. We describe the first case of a female chronic haemodialysis patient in which this device was clinically used for a infection that persisted for 4 days despite antibiotic therapy. After a single treatment, the bacterial load decreased and the blood cultures at the end of a 4 hour haemoperfusion exhibited no bacterial growth.

Pediatric sepsis presents a severe risk to immunocompromised children, especially those with cancer or pre-existing conditions, posing a significant threat to their lives. Cytokine hemadsorption has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach for managing sepsis and severe inflammatory conditions in critically ill patients. This innovative method involves eliminating pro-inflammatory cytokines from the bloodstream, targeting the underlying hyper-inflammatory response often seen in critical illnesses.

Sepsis is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to an infection damages its own tissues and organs. It can lead to organ failure and death if not treated. Cytosorb is a promising medical device for hemadsorption in pediatric septic patients (under 18 years old).

PURIFY-OBS-1 is an observational study evaluating the safety and efficacy of Seraph 100 Microbind Affinity Blood Filter (Seraph 100) use for COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The Seraph 100 is a hemoperfusion device containing heparin-coated beads that can bind to, and reduce levels of, some circulating pathogens and inflammatory molecules. This study evaluated whether treatment with the Seraph 100 affected circulating and mucosal antibody levels in critically ill COVID-19 subjects.

Objective: To design and prepare a high efficiency bilirubin adsorbent with good mechanical properties and biocompatibility.
Methods: In this study, quaternary ammonium pyridine was designed and synthesized, and then modified polyether sulfone microspheres, or PES/p(4-VP-co-N-VP)@6 microspheres, were prepared by phase conversion and electrostatic spraying. The morphology of the polymer components and the microspheres were studied by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
