The mechanisms that govern cell interactions during organ formation are not fully understood. In this issue of Developmental Cell, Miao et al. demonstrate a channel-independent role for gap junction proteins in the establishment of contacts between three cell types that build up the micropyle during oocyte development in Drosophila.

The phase separation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-polypropylene (PP) blends was studied using atomic force microscopy in tapping mode to obtain height and phase images. The results are compared with those from scanning electron microscopy imaging and are connected to the thermomechanical properties of the blends, characterised through differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile testing. Pure PP, as well as 10:90 and 20:80 weight ratio HDPE-PP blends, showed a homogeneous morphology, but the 25:75 HDPE-PP blends exhibited a sub-micrometre droplet-matrix structure, and the 50:50 HDPE-PP blends displayed a more complex co-continuous nano/microphase-separated structure.

In recent years, a number of synthetic potentiators of antibiotics have been discovered. Their action can significantly enhance the antibacterial effect and limit the spread of antibiotic resistance through inhibition of bacterial cystathionine-γ-lyase. To expand the known set of potentiators, we developed methods for the synthesis of five new representatives of 6-bromoindole derivatives-potential inhibitors of bacterial cystathionine-γ-lyase-namely potassium 3-amino-5-((6-bromoindolyl)methyl)thiophene-2-carboxylate () and its 6-bromoindazole analogs ( and ), along with two 6-broindazole analogs of the parent compound .

The development of chirality descriptors for quantitative chirality structure-activity relationship (QCSAR) modeling has always attracted attention, owing to the importance of chiral molecules in pharmaceutical, agriculture, food, and fragrance industries, and environmental toxicology. The utility of a multidimensional space of novel relative chirality indices (RCIs) in the QCSAR modeling of twenty CCR2 antagonists is reported upon in this paper. The numerical characterization of chirality by the RCI approach gives a large pool of chirality descriptors with different degrees of mutual correlation (the correlation coefficient among the computed descriptors varied from 0.

To thoroughly study the stress-strain relationship of lightweight mixed ceramic concrete, this paper conducts axial compressive strength tests on three groups of lightweight mixed ceramic concrete specimens with different types and contents as the basis. It establishes the elastic modulus calculation formula and compressive stress-strain formula for lightweight mixed ceramic concrete by combining with the current standards and related research. The results show that lightweight mixed ceramic concrete, made of a mixture of different types and densities of ceramic grains, has better mechanical properties and deformation properties.

Background/objectives: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men. The increase in incidence rates of more advanced and aggressive forms of the disease year-to-year fuels urgency to find new therapeutic interventions and bolster already established ones. PCa is a uniquely targetable disease in that it is fueled by male hormones (androgens) that drive tumorigenesis via the androgen receptor or AR.
