We report on Baltic Sea polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pressure based on the U.S. EPA PAHs in view of millennial and decadal developments utilizing data from sediment deposits and seawater. Pre-industrial PAH contents ranged from 500 to 4500 ng/g TOC. Maximum PAH contents were up to 100,000 ng/g TOC and date back to the 1960s to 1970s with maximum pollutant inputs. Contemporary sediment PAH contents with 10,000 to 35,000 ng/g TOC and seawater concentrations with about 1 to 16 ng/l show spatial variability due to different local inputs and sediment characteristics. Pre-industrial compositional change from low molecular weight to high molecular weight (HMW) PAH indicates changing sources from mostly petroleum to combustion. Application of diagnostic ratios reveals petroleum and combustion as contemporary PAH sources and that traffic emissions continuously contribute to the Baltic PAH profile. Medium to high toxicological risk to the marine community might arise from current HMW PAH contents.

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are electric fields clinically approved for cancer treatment, delivered via arrays attached to the patient's skin. Here, we present a protocol for applying TTFields to torso orthotopic and subcutaneous mouse tumor models using the inovivo system. We guide users on proper system component connections, study protocol design, mouse fur depilation, array application, and treatment condition adjustment and monitoring.

A considerable percentage of ineffective treatment in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) may be related to subtherapeutic dosage or non-adherence. The aim of the study was to develop a simple analytical method suitable for plasma determination of selected drugs: riociguat (RIO), bosentan (BOS) and macitentan (MAC) administered to PAH patients. An isocratic HPLC-UV system (Spectra Physics - Shimadzu) with a manual injector (50 μL loop) was applied.

The World Health Organization has classified air pollution as a carcinogen, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major components of air particulates of carcinogenic concern. Thus far, most studies focused on genotoxic high molecular weight PAHs; however, recent studies indicate potential carcinogenicity of the non-genotoxic lower molecular weight PAHs (LMW PAHs) that are found in indoor and outdoor air pollution as well as secondhand cigarette smoke. We hypothesize that LMW PAHs contribute to the promotion stage of cancer when combined with benzo[]pyrene (B[]P), a legacy PAH.

This study compares , an EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)-labelled smoked dry-cured ham from the Dalmatia region in Croatia, with non-PGI hams from the same area, focusing on the impact of PGI certification on the product quality. The investigation is prompted by the increasing presence of dry-cured hams lacking the PGI label on the market, aspiring to compete with esteemed high-value PGI products. Samples of 28 smoked dry-cured hams (12 PGI and 16 non-PGI) were analysed for chemical properties, fatty acid composition, volatile compounds, PAH content and sensory characteristics.

The content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a traditional Spanish smoked sausage known as 'Botillo del Bierzo' was analysed. The determination and quantification of PAH4 (the sum of benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[b]-fluoranthene and chrysene) in the smoked sausage were performed using GC-MS. The results showed that smoking 'Botillo del Bierzo' for 24 h contributes very little to the increase in PAH levels in the product, with no significant differences ( < 0.
