Seabirds are suitable biomonitors for several persistent organic pollutants (POP), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), although scarce studies of PAHs in seabirds are available, especially in South American populations. Therefore, this study aimed to assess OCPs, PCBs and PAHs, through gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses, in liver (n = 9) and muscle tissue (n = 13) from juvenile Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) found stranded on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil. DDT-related compounds were the most frequently detected OCP, and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), the main DDT metabolite found in penguin tissues. OCP concentrations in liver were two-fold higher than in muscle tissues. Compound specific ratios identified recent exposure of penguins to some OCPs as well as evidence of legacy pollution associated with industrial sources. In this study, a large drinking water reservoir (Fengshuba Reservoir) was chosen as a representative case, and the bacterial communities in the sediments and soils of Water-level fluctuating zone (WLFZ) as well as their responses to heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the abundance and diversity of the bacterial community obviously changed with seasonal hydrological variations in sediments, and the absolute abundance and composition of bacteria community differed significantly between the sediment phase and soil phase. Bacteria with the ability to degrade pollutants rapidly proliferate and gain ascendancy in the soil phase, with Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia (B-C-P) and Bradyrhizobium forming the core of the largest community.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are primarily generated through the incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of organic materials in various industrial processes. Foods may become contaminated with environmental PAHs found in air, soil, or water, or through industrial food processing methods such as smoking, roasting, drying, and grilling. The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan has established maximum levels for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and indicative values for BaP as well as PAH4 (the sum of benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene) in foods as operational guidelines.

A new type of sorbent functionalized with π-hole bond, perfluoronaphthyl bonded magnetic nanosorbent (FeO@SiO-CF), was designed and synthesized. The morphology, structure and magnetic properties of the sorbent were characterized. The results of a comparative experiment with naphthyl bonded magnetic nanosorbent (FeO@SiO-CH) revealed that the π-hole bonds between perfluoronaphthyl and PAHs improved adsorbilities for PAHs in water compared to the traditional π-π interactions between naphthyl and PAHs.
