The fragmentation dynamics of water in a superexcited state play an important role in the ionosphere of the planets and in the photodissociation region (PDR) of the planetary nebula. In this Letter, we experimentally study the fragmentation dynamics of HO with the energy above its ionization potential initiated by vacuum ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses. The experimental results indicate that the binary fragmentation channels H + OH and the triple channels O + 2H both present at 96.4 nm photolysis. Electronically excited OH super-rotors ( = 0, ≥ 36, or = 1, ≥ 34), with the internal energy just above the OH () dissociation energy, are observed for the first time, which are only supported by the large centrifugal barriers. An absolute cross section of these super-rotors is estimated to be 0.7(±0.3) × 10 cm. The tunnelling rates of these extremely rotationally excited states are also analyzed. This work shows a spectacular example of energy transfer from a photon to fragment rotation through photodissociation.

The photocatalytic efficiency of materials such as graphene and noble metal nanoclusters depends on their plasmon lifetimes. Plasmon dephasing and decay in these materials is thought to occur on ultrafast time scales, ranging from a few femtoseconds to hundreds of femtoseconds and longer. Here we focus on understanding the dephasing and decay pathways of excited states in small lithium and silver clusters and in plasmonic states of the π-conjugated molecule anthracene, providing insights that are crucial for interpreting optical properties and photophysics.

A green methodology for the synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from coffee husk without the use of any toxic solvents is proposed in this work. Sonochemical exfoliation of biochar, obtained from the thermal carbonization of coffee husk (from a certified coffee seeds) at low temperature in an air-restricted atmosphere, is described as an alternative procedure for the sustainable production of CQDs. The synthesized CQDs exhibited blue fluorescence with a strong maximum emission band at 410 nm when excited at a maximum absorption wavelength of 330 nm.

A zinc(II) coordination polymer, [Zn(Hdhtp)(2,2'-bpy)(HO)] (1), has been utilized as a dual-mode luminescence-colorimetric sensor (Hdhtp = 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalate and 2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The presence of hydroxyl groups in Hdhtp can promote excited-state intra- and intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomena. Therefore, compound 1, which displays high stability in aqueous environments, exhibits a strong green-yellow photoluminescence.

In this study, a cyanine skeleton fluorescent parent core was designed based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) principle, and 2, 4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) was used as the specific recognition site for phenylthiophene (PhSH). The probe showed a fluorescence transition from colorless to red under 410 nm excitation, which had the characteristics of fast response, high selectivity, low detection limit (55 nM), and the fluorescence intensity showed a positive linear correlation with PhSH concentration in the range of 0-100 μM (R = 0.9921).

Luminescence of NaLaMgWO doped with lanthanide activators Tb, Eu and Er are reported. These activators exhibit characteristic emission spectra. Either the emission colour or the excitation spectrum distinguishes between these activators.
