Largely inspired from clinical concepts like brain reserve, cognitive reserve, and neural compensation, here we review data showing how neural circuits reorganize in presymptomatic and early symptomatic hAPP mice to maintain memory intact. By informing on molecular alterations and compensatory adaptations which take place in the brain before mice show cognitive impairments, these data can help to identify ultra-early disease markers that could be targeted in a therapeutic perspective aimed at preventing rather than treating cognitive deterioration.

Measuring the effects of motion corruption in fetal fMRI.

Irregular and unpredictable fetal movement is the most common cause of artifacts in in utero functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), affecting analysis and limiting our understanding of early functional brain development. The accurate detection of corrupted functional connectivity (FC) resulting from motion artifacts or preprocessing, instead of neural activity, is a prerequisite for reliable and valid analysis of FC and early brain development. Approaches to address this problem in adult data are of limited utility in fetal fMRI.

Improved approximation-free control for the leader-follower tracking of the multi-agent systems with disturbance and unknown nonlinearity.

Approximation-free control effectively addresses uncertainty and disturbances without relying on approximation techniques such as fuzzy logic systems (FLS) and neural networks (NNs). However, singularity problems-where signals exceed preset boundaries under dynamic operating conditions-remain a challenge. This paper proposes an improved approximation-free control (I-AFC) method for the multi-agent system, which introduces a novel singularity compensator, providing a low-complexity design with exceptional adaptability while reducing the risk of singularity issues under changing working conditions (random initial values, system parameter variations, and changes in topology graph and followers' dynamics).

Introduction: Motor-imagery-based Brain-Machine Interface (MI-BMI) has been established as an effective treatment for post-stroke hemiplegia. However, the need for long-term intervention can represent a significant burden on patients. Here, we demonstrate that motor imagery (MI) instructions for BMI training, when supplemented with somatosensory stimulation in addition to conventional verbal instructions, can help enhance MI capabilities of healthy participants.

"The narrative" is a complex cognitive process that has sparked a debate on whether its features age through maintenance or decline. To address this question, we attempted to uncover the narrative aging and its underlying neural characteristics with a cross-validation based cognitive neuro-decoding statistical framework. This framework used a total of 740 healthy older participants with completed narrative and extensive neuropsychological tests and MRI scans.

Versatile graceful degradation framework for bio-inspired proprioception with redundant soft sensors.

January 2025

Neuro-robotics Laboratory, Department of Robotics, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Reliable proprioception and feedback from soft sensors are crucial for enabling soft robots to function intelligently in real-world environments. Nevertheless, soft sensors are fragile and are susceptible to various damage sources in such environments. Some researchers have utilized redundant configuration, where healthy sensors compensate instantaneously for lost ones to maintain proprioception accuracy.
