Norepinephrine in vertebrates and its invertebrate analog, octopamine, regulate the activity of neural circuits. We find that, when hungry, larvae switch activity in type II octopaminergic motor neurons (MNs) to high-frequency bursts, which coincide with locomotion-driving bursts in type I glutamatergic MNs that converge on the same muscles. Optical quantal analysis across hundreds of synapses simultaneously reveals that octopamine potentiates glutamate release by tonic type Ib MNs, but not phasic type Is MNs, and occurs via the G-coupled octopamine receptor (OAMB).

The American cockroach Periplaneta americana (L.) (Blattodea, Blattidae) has been a model organism for biochemical and physiological study for almost a century, however, its use does not benefit from the genetic tools found in key model species such as Drosophila melanogaster. To facilitate the use of the cockroach as a model system in neuroscience and to serve as a foundation for functional and translational experimentation, a transcriptome of the cephalic ganglia was assembled and annotated, and differential expression profiles between these ganglia were assessed.

The signaling landscape of insulin-like growth factor 1.

J Biol Chem

The sheer amplitude of biological actions of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) affecting all types of cells in all tissues suggests a vast signaling landscape for this ubiquitous humoral signal. While the canonical signaling pathways primarily involve the Ras/MAPK and PI3K/AKT cascades, the evolutionary conservation of insulin-like peptides (ILPs) and their pathways hints at the potential for novel functions to emerge over time. Indeed, the evolutionary trajectory of ILPs opens the possibility of either novel functions for these two pathways, novel downstream routes, or both.

Behavioral responses of clams to recurrent marine heatwaves.

Mar Pollut Bull

January 2025

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have escalated significantly in recent decades, causing major shifts in marine ecosystems, particularly affecting clams like Ruditapes philippinarum that are crucial to coastal environments.
  • The study found that clams maintained their burrowing abilities during low-intensity MHWs, but their burrowing decreased sharply during high-intensity MHWs.
  • Despite some impact on burrowing, the clams showed minimal overall behavioral changes during repeated MHW exposure, with notable increases in gene expressions related to energy metabolism and behavioral neuroscience.
