A Physically Based Approach for Estimating Hydraulic Conductivity from HPT Pressure and Flowrate.

Published: March 2021

The hydraulic profiling tool (HPT) is widely used to generate profiles of relative permeability vs. depth. In this work, prior numerical modeling results are used to develop a relationship between probe advance rate V (cm/s), probe diameter D (cm), water injection rate Q (mL/min), corrected pressure P (psi), and hydraulic conductivity K (feet/d) [Formula: see text] where E is an empirically derived hydraulic efficiency factor. The relationship is validated by 23 HPT profiles that, after averaging K vertically, were similar to slug test results in adjoining monitoring wells. The best fit value of E for these profiles was 2.02. This equation provides a physically based approach for generating hydraulic conductivity profiles with HPT tooling.

Deep monitoring wells with long screens crossing the transition zone between freshwater and saltwater are often used in coastal areas to characterize fresh groundwater resources and the depth of saline groundwater. However, past studies have demonstrated that long-screen wells can lead to biased observations of the transition zone, since vertical flow within the borehole can modify the shape and elevation of the transition zone in and around the borehole compared to undisturbed conditions without a well. Here, field observations and variable-density numerical flow simulations are used to evaluate, under natural flow conditions, how the installation of long-screen wells can provide time-varying biased observations of the freshwater-saltwater transition zone, and how various aquifer and well parameters affect the magnitude of these biases.

Contrasts in hydraulics underlie the divergent performances of Populus and native tree species in water-limited sandy land environments.

Populus tree species are commonly used for creating shelter forests in vast areas of northern China, at least partially due to their fast growth. However, they are facing severe problems of decline and mortality caused by drought. In contrast, tree species native to water-limited environments usually have slow growth and are currently not commonly used in afforestation, while these species are gaining more attention in forestry for their greater resilience to drought.

Spontaneous capillary flow in rectangular microfluidic channels is employed in microfluidic devices for various applications. The exact solution for flow in a rectangular cross-sectional channel has a complex point that contains an infinite sum term. The flow depends on the depth-width ratio of the rectangular channel's cross-section, .

Intelligent control algorithms for posture and height control of four-leg hydraulic supports.

To address limitations of traditional inclinometers and height sensors in determining the posture and support height of hydraulic supports in coal mining, we propose a novel method predicated on travel measurements of the leg and tail beam cylinders. This method calculates the posture and height of hydraulic supports in mechanized mining. By conducting meticulous kinematic analysis of the hydraulic supports, a skeleton model of the main structural parameters of the hydraulic support was constructed.
