Purpose: To evaluate the recent intraoperative lagophthalmos formula method for levator resection in determining postoperative lid height in congenital ptosis on Egyptian patients.

Methods: This is a prospective case series which included 20 eyelids of 17 Egyptian children with congenital ptosis whose levator function is 4 mm or better. They underwent levator muscle resection guided by the recently presented intraoperative lagophthalmos formula. Preoperative Margin-to-Reflex Distance 1 (MRD1) and levator function were measured then intraoperative palpebral fissure opening was determined from formula: Intraoperative lagophthalmos = 9.08 - (0.48 × Preoperative MRD1) - (0.26 × Levator function). Success was defined as postoperative MRD1 ⩾ 3 mm and difference between both eyelid height ⩽1 mm at 6 months.

Results: From 20 eyelids, there were five cases with mild (25%), 11 with moderate (55%), and four with severe (20%) ptosis. They showed success in four cases (80%), eight cases (73%), and three cases (75%) in each degree respectively with an overall success of 15 cases (75%).

Conclusion: Proposed intraoperative lagophthalmos formula showed relatively good results in predicting postoperative eyelid level in Egyptian children with simple congenital ptosis with fair to good levator function.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intraoperative lagophthalmos formula (IOLF) for levator resection in congenital ptosis and investigate the optimal preoperative conditions for IOLF application.

Methods: This retrospective interventional cohort study evaluated 30 eyelids of 22 patients with congenital ptosis who underwent levator resection using the IOLF to calculate the extent of surgical correction under general anesthesia. Surgical success was defined as margin reflex distance-1 (MRD1)≥3 mm in each eye and a difference of MRD1 1 mm between the eyes at 6 months postoperatively.

Purpose: Orbital tumor surgery can be challenging when the tumor is located in a very narrow surgical field and close to important structures, such as nerves or extraocular muscles that can be damaged during surgery. Advances in technology and special surgical techniques help to avoid such damage. We describe our experience using SONOPET® ultrasonic surgical aspirator to remove 12 different orbital tumors that were difficult to treat due to their poorly defined borders, adhesions, or location.

A Modified Technique Using Levator Aponeurosis-Müller Muscle-Reinforced Plication for Blepharoptosis Correction.

Ann Plast Surg

April 2020

From the Department of Plastic Surgery, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

Background: Blepharoptosis is a common and challenging clinical problem for oculoplastic surgeons, and various surgical techniques have been used to correct ptosis. The aims of this study were to present the clinical results of a modified technique using levator aponeurosis-Müller muscle-reinforced plication for blepharoptosis correction and to demonstrate its advantages over conventional advancement or plication methods.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Plastic Surgery Department of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital between April 2017 and September 2018.
