We consider the symmetric two-state 16-vertex model on the square lattice whose vertex weights are invariant under any permutation of adjacent edge states. The vertex-weight parameters are restricted to a critical manifold which is self-dual under the gauge transformation. The critical properties of the model are studied numerically with the Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group method. Accuracy of the method is tested on two exactly solvable cases: the Ising model and a specific version of the Baxter eight-vertex model in a zero field that belong to different universality classes. Numerical results show that the two exactly solvable cases are connected by a line of critical points with the polarization as the order parameter. There are numerical indications that critical exponents vary continuously along this line in such a way that the weak universality hypothesis is violated.

Here, an artificial spin ice lattice is introduced that exhibits unique Ising and non-Ising behavior under specific field switching protocols because of the inclusion of coupled nanomagnets into the unit cell. In the Ising regime, a magnetic switching mechanism that generates a uni- or bimodal distribution of states dependent on the alignment of the field is demonstrated with respect to the lattice unit cell. In addition, a method for generating a plethora of randomly distributed energy states across the lattice, consisting of Ising and Landau states, is investigated through magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic modeling.

Density functional theory studies on the experimentally known Cp*3Rh3B12H12Rh(B4H9RhCp*) as well as the model compounds Cp4Rh4B12H12 and Cp3Rh3B12H12Rh(η3-C3H5) indicate low energy structures with central Rh4B12 tetracapped tetratruncated tetrahedra (TTT) for these 32 Wadean skeletal electron systems. This skeletal electron count corresponds to 2k2 (k = 4) skeletal electrons suggesting a spherical aromatic system with filled 1s + 1p + 1d + 1f molecular orbitals as well as an isocloso 2n (= 32 for n = 16) skeletal electron count. Similar TTT structures are found for the valence isoelectronic 32 skeletal electron systems [Cp4M''4B12H12]4+ (M'' = Ni, Pd, Pt) and [Cp4M'4B12H12]4- (M' = Fe, Ru, Os).

Potential to stabilize 16-vertex tetrahedral coinage-metal cluster architectures related to Au.

Doctorado en Fisicoquímica Molecular, Universidad Andres Bello, República 275, Santiago, Chile.

DFT calculations were carried out on a series of tetrahedral 16-atom superatomic clusters having 20 or 18 jellium electrons (je) and structurally related to Au20, namely, [M16]4-/2- (M = Cu, Ag, and Au) and [M4'M12'']0/2+ (M' = Zn, Cd, Hg; M'' = Cu, Ag, Au). While the bare homonuclear 20-je species required further stabilization to be isolated, their 18-je counterparts exhibited better stability. Lowering the electron count led to structural modification from a compact structure (20-je) to a hollow sphere (18-je).
