Unlabelled: The ongoing outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that began in Wuhan, China, became an international emergency when thousands of people were infected around the world. COVID-19 emerged in Pakistan in April 2020, precipitating a nationwide lockdown. While some countries are now recovering from the pandemic, its peak is not estimated to occur in Pakistan until August 2020. We present a case of rheumatic heart disease with fever, myalgia and an unusual radiological finding of the virus.

Learning Points: Unusual radiological findings are being seen in COVID-19 patients.Pleural effusion in a mildly symptomatic patient is a rare presentation of the disease.Early aggressive treatment can produce dramatic improvement in COVID-19 pneumonia.

Regular physical activity is beneficial for both physical and mental health. However, studies on physical activity levels among middle-aged and elderly individuals in China are relatively scarce, and the association between different activity levels and certain chronic diseases remains unclear. Using cross-sectional data from the 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this study describes the prevalence of chronic diseases and examines their associations with physical activity (PA).

Metal-backed versus all-poly tibia in the original cartier unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: outcomes and survivorship at long-term follow-up.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

December 2024

Sezione di Chirurgia Protesica ad Indirizzo Robotico Unità di Traumatologia dello Sport, Fondazione Poliambulanza Istituto Ospedaliero, Brescia, Italy.

Purpose: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a viable option for localized osteoarthritis (OA) or avascular osteonecrosis with several advantages over total knee arthroplasty (TKA). UKA implants may feature a tibial component either all-polyethylene (AP) or metal-backed (MB). This study aims to retrospectively compare the clinical outcomes and survivorship of 74 UKAs over 16 years, focusing on comparing the results and survivorship of MB versus AP tibial tray.

Introduction: Pericardial effusion (PE) is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial space, which, if severe, is associated with high mortality. The causes are diverse, including infective and non-infective. Few studies have looked at the spectrum of severity and causes in Northern Nigeria.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) associated with rheumatoid arthritis or with connective tissue diseases such as systemic sclerosis can be collectively named systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease-associated ILDs (SARD-ILDs) or rheumatic musculoskeletal disorder-associated ILDs. SARD-ILDs result in substantial morbidity and mortality, and there is a high medical need for effective therapies that target both fibrotic and inflammatory pathways in SARD-ILD. Phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) hydrolyses cyclic AMP, which regulates multiple pathways involved in inflammatory processes.

Purpose: To examine whether incorporating anatomy-centred deep learning can improve generalisability and enable prediction of disease progression.

Methods: This retrospective multicentre study included conventional pelvic radiographs of four different patient cohorts focusing on axial spondyloarthritis collected at university and community hospitals. The first cohort, which consisted of 1483 radiographs, was split into training (n=1261) and validation (n=222) sets.
