Institute for Infection Diseases and Infection Control, University Hospital Jena, Am Klinikum 1, 07747, Jena, Germany.

Published: April 2021

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease with an increasing incidence worldwide. The clinical presentation is unspecific and ranges from an asymptomatic clinical course to an acute fulminant disease. The current case report describes a 32-year-old male patient who presented with ST segment elevation in the electrocardiogram about 14 days after cross-country running. Pericarditis was diagnosed and linked to an acute leptospirosis that was serologically confirmed.

Background: Leptospirosis is an acute zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic , primarily transmitted to humans through contact with water or soil contaminated by the bacteria. It is globally distributed, with heightened prevalence in tropical regions. While prior studies have examined the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and risk factors of leptospirosis, few have explored trends and emerging topics in the field.

Molecular Characterization of Gene Encoding Outer Membrane Protein in Pathogenic Serovars in Iran.

J Trop Med

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO), Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute, Karaj, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on cloning and sequencing a gene related to a protein that is preserved across different pathogenic serovars during infections.
  • 23 pathogenic and 2 non-pathogenic serovars were analyzed, sourced from a microbiology lab in Iran, with three serovars also used in a trivalent vaccine.
  • The results showed that the gene was present in all pathogenic serovars but absent in non-pathogenic ones, highlighting its potential for creating an effective recombinant vaccine due to its high conservation (95.5% to 100% similarity).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the causes and outcomes of acute kidney injury (AKI) in 464 patients at a tertiary care center in Sri Lanka, highlighting the influence of age, comorbidities, and severity on patient prognosis.
  • Of the patients, 56.5% were male, with a mean age of 57.04 years; by 90 days, most patients showed improvement in renal function, though mortality rates were highest in those over 60 and with more severe AKI.
  • The research identified major challenges in AKI management, including inadequate resources and infrastructure, underscoring the importance of early identification and intervention for at-risk populations.
