High takeoff of the right coronary artery by echocardiography: normal variant or something more?

Cardiol Young

January 2025

Congenital Heart Center, Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Purpose: High takeoff of the right coronary artery suspected by echocardiography is widely considered a normal variant. However, in our experience, some patients initially thought to have a high takeoff of the coronary artery were later found to have an anomalous coronary origin with high-risk features. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that high takeoff of the right coronary artery suspected by echocardiography may indicate the presence of an anomalous coronary artery lesion with an intramural course requiring further investigation.

J Pediatr Adolesc Gynecol

January 2025

Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Yale University School of Medicine.

Objective: Subocclusive variants of the hymen are a group of hymenal anomalies that result due to a failure of canalization of the urogenital sinus. One of these variations is the microperforate hymen, for which accurate incidence is unknown. Microperforate hymen is a non-obstructing variation that allows for menstrual egress and often patients present due to inability to use a tampon.

Population Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Sotalol Following Expedited Intravenous Loading in Patients With Atrial Arrhythmias.

CPT Pharmacometrics Syst Pharmacol

January 2025

Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Pediatrics, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

Sotalol, a class III antiarrhythmic agent, is used to maintain sinus rhythm in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (AFIB/AFL). Despite its efficacy, sotalol's use is limited by its potential to cause life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias due to QT interval prolongation. Traditionally, sotalol administration required hospitalization to monitor these risks.

Background: Pediatric flexible flatfoot (FFF) is a common condition characterized by the collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, which can lead to pain and functional impairment in a subset of patients. Subtalar arthroereisis (AR) is a minimally invasive procedure that corrects FFF by limiting excessive pronation of the subtalar joint. Two main techniques exist: endosinotarsal AR, which involves placing an implant in the sinus tarsi, and exosinotarsal AR, which uses a screw external to the sinus tarsi.

Electrocardiography interpretation competency among pediatric and child health residents at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

BMC Med Educ

December 2024

Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Background: Electrocardiography (ECG) interpretation competency is vital to ensure the timely initiation of life-saving treatment for emergent ECG conditions. This competency has not been well-studied among pediatric and child health residents. Hence, the study aimed to determine the competency in ECG interpretation and its predictors among residents at the National University of Ethiopia.
