Structural, architectural, contractile or electrophysiological alterations may occur in the left atrium (LA). The concept of LA cardiopathy is supported by accumulating scientific evidence demonstrating that LA remodeling has become a cornerstone diagnostic and prognostic marker. The structure and the function of LA and left atrial appendage (LAA) which is an integral part of the LA, are key elements for a better understanding of multiple clinical conditions, most notably atrial fibrillation (AF), cardioembolism, heart failure and mitral valve diseases.

Practices for controlling intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) vary considerably between centres. To help understand the rational basis for such variance in care, this study aims to identify the patient-level predictors of changes in ICP management. We extracted all heterogeneous data (2008 pre-ICU and ICU variables) collected from a prospective cohort (n = 844, 51 ICUs) of ICP-monitored TBI patients in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI study.

Background: Current guidelines support routine perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) to minimize surgical site infection in kidney transplantation (KT), though data regarding the current practices of PAP is lacking in China.
Objective: To survey the routine PAP strategies in KT, and analyze main clinical considerations associated with adjusted antibiotic dosing regimens in different Chinese hospitals.
Methods: A nationwide survey was conducted on behalf of the National Alliance of Transplant Pharmacists.

Background: The primary goal of perioperative antibiotics is to reduce the rate of surgical site infections (SSI); however, in certain surgical procedures, the use of perioperative antibiotics has been shown to have no impact on the rate of SSI. Inappropriate use of antimicrobials increases cost, potential side effects and further promotes antibiotic resistance. This study aims to provide insight into the adherence of South African otorhinolaryngologists to available evidence-based international guidelines.
