Objectives: Spingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and ceramides are bioactive sphingolipids that influence cancer cell fate. Anti-ceramide antibodies might inhibit the effects of ceramide. The aim of this study was to assess the potential role of circulating S1P and anti-ceramide antibody as biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: Esophageal atresia (EA) is associated with tracheobronchomalacia (TBM), which in its most severe form, causes blue spells, brief resolved unexplained events (BRUEs) that can require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) or ventilator dependence, often requiring tracheostomy. We study the role of tracheobronchopexy, as an alternative to tracheostomy, in EA patients with severe life-threatening TBM.

Methods: We reviewed EA patients who underwent tracheobronchopexy for blue spells, BRUEs, and failure to wean PPV or extubate from February 2013 to September 2021 at two institutions.

Background: The role of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) in the management of patients presenting with pulmonary infiltrates after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value and safety of FOB at our center.

Methods: This retrospective study included all patients with post-HSCT pulmonary infiltrates who underwent FOB between 2016 and 2019.

Use of Narrow Band Imaging to Guide Endobronchial Biopsy for Suspected Sarcoidosis.

J Bronchology Interv Pulmonol

April 2025

Department of Medicine, Division of Respirology, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB.

Background: Diagnosis of sarcoidosis often involves endobronchial biopsy (EBB), but studies have shown varying yields for EBB in suspected sarcoidosis, partly due to differences in identifying abnormal mucosa under white light (WL). Narrow band imaging (NBI) may assist in the visualization of abnormal mucosa, but its role in sarcoidosis remains to be characterized.

Methods: Individuals referred for suspected sarcoidosis were considered for enrollment.

High BMP7 Expression May Worsen Airway Disease in COPD by Altering Epithelial Cell Behavior.

Int J Chron Obstruct Pulmon Dis

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Qilu Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: Airway disease is the main pathological basis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP7) is a multi-functional growth factor that belongs to the transforming growth factor superfamily, which affects the regulation of proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Previous research has shown that BMP7 is highly expressed in the airway epithelia of patients with COPD, but its role in airway disease has not been fully elucidated.
