As humans age, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) occasionally acquire mutations in genes including DNMT3A that enable them to outcompete other HSCs and increase leukemia risk. In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, Tovy et al. (2020) report a previously uncharacterized mechanism by which DNMT3A loss confers increased fitness to HSCs by analyzing a rare experiment of nature.

Plants known as obligate aerobes developed different mechanisms to overcome the damage incurred under oxygen limitation. One of the survival strategies to have commonly appeared in hydrophytic plants is the escape strategy, which accelerates plant axial organs' growth in order to escape hypoxic conditions as soon as possible. The present study aimed to distinguish the alterations in coleoptile elongation, viability and metabolic profiles in coleoptiles of slow- and fast-growing rice varieties.

Extreme conditions, such as cold and high humidity in northeast China's high-latitude maize region, can hinder crop yield and stability during the vegetative stage. However, there is a paucity of research examining the effects of simultaneous cold and high humidity stress on plant responses. In this study, we characterized the acclimation of JD558 (cold- and high humidity-sensitive hybrid) and JD441 (cold- and high humidity-tolerant hybrid) to stress at sowing caused by cold (4 °C), high humidity (25%), and their combined stress for five days, using physiological measurements and metabolomics during the stress treatments and recovery stages.

Background: Deep sowing has emerged as a vital agricultural strategy, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, as it allows seeds to access water stored in deeper soil layers. This approach facilitates successful germination and establishment of crops, even in challenging environmental conditions. Previous studies have shown that the length of the maize mesocotyl is an important trait influencing deep-sowing tolerance.

The aim of this work was to check the effects of five Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculants from different producers on growth, photochemical efficiency, nitrate reductase activity, amount of hydrogen peroxide, activity of catalase, non-specific peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase, seed yield, and nodulation of soybean cv. 'Malaga'. We also evaluated expression of such nodulation genes as NIC1, NOD21, and NORKb.
