Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A occur frequently in grains and are associated with carcinogenic, and nephrotoxic properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the level of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A contamination in wheat samples obtained from different Egyptian governorates and to assess the effect of gamma irradiation on AFB in spiked wheat samples, as well as to evaluate the estimated daily intake and hazard index. Thirty-six wheat grain samples purchased from different sale points were analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Data revealed that 33.33 % of the wheat grain samples were contaminated by aflatoxin B, whereas only 16.66 % of the wheat samples were above the maximum limits (2 μg/kg) set by the European Commission. Ochratoxin A was only detected in two wheat grain samples, and the results were considered below the maximum limit (5 μg/kg) set by the European Commission. On studying the effect of gamma irradiation on wheat samples spiked by aflatoxin B (20 μg/kg), results revealed that aflatoxin B was reduced to 1.22 and 0.94 μg/kg for samples gamma-irradiated at a dose of 10 and 20 KGy respectively. Estimated daily intake of ochratoxin A in wheat samples was found to be higher than that of the tolerable daily intake; however, hazard index values were below one, thus demonstrating no threat to human health.

Differential diversity and structure of autotrophs in agricultural soils of Qinghai Province.

Key Laboratory of Medicinal Plant and Animal Resources of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai Province, Academy of Plateau Science and Sustainability, School of Life Science, Qinghai Normal University, Xining, China.

Unlabelled: The biodiversity of CO-assimilating bacterial communities is pivotal for carbon sequestration in agricultural systems. Changes in the diversity, structure, and activity of the soil chemolithoautotrophic bacteria were examined in four agricultural areas, Dulan (DL), Gonghe (GH), Huzhu (HZ), and Datong (DT) counties in Qinghai Province, where wheat, oilseed rape, and barley were planted. This process was performed using Illumina amplicon sequencing of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) gene ( Form I) and activity data.

Background/objective: Zinc deficiency is common worldwide and has been linked to reduced growth and immune function, increased risk of and slower recovery from infections, and increased risk of non-communicable diseases. To address the issue, zinc biofortification of wheat has been proposed as a sustainable approach to increase dietary zinc intake in countries like Pakistan, where zinc deficiency rates are high and wheat is the primary staple crop. Since plasma zinc concentration (PZC) does not reliably respond to small changes in zinc intake, biomarkers sensitive to small changes in zinc intake achievable though biofortification are needed.

The understanding of the characteristics and metabolite changes in waxy and normal maize kernels after cooking is rather limited. This study was designed to meticulously analyze the differences in characteristics and metabolites of these kernels before and after steaming. To cut environmental impacts, samples were obtained by pollinating one ear with mixed pollen.

Effects of Concentrate Feed Starch Source Offered Twice a Day on Feed Intake and Milk Production of Cows During the Early Postpartum Period.

Animals (Basel)

December 2024

Agriculture Victoria Research, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Ellinbank, Victoria 3821, Australia.

This experiment determined the effects of two different starch sources when offered twice a day to cows during the early postpartum period (1 to 23 d postpartum, treatment period) on dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, and milk production. The subsequent effects on milk production in the carryover period (24 to 72 d) where cows received a common diet (grazed perennial ryegrass pasture plus concentrate supplements) were also measured. Thirty-two multiparous dairy cows were offered concentrate feed (8 kg DM/d) containing 5 kg DM of crushed wheat grain or ground corn grain (7 h in vitro starch digestibility of 65.
