The ability to update predictive relationships and adjust behavior accordingly is critical for survival. Females take longer to update expectancies under conditions of outcome omission. It remains unknown whether that is also the case under conditions when outcomes are delivered such as in overexpectation. Here we examined whether male and female rats are able to learn from overexpectation using the same learning parameters. Our data show that males but not females learn from overexpectation when given just a single day of compound training, whereas both sexes learn when given extended 2 days of overexpectation training. These data provide important insight into sex differences that link with prior work and thus open an avenue for the study of how conflicting memories interact in the male and female brain. Gengnianchun Against HO-Induced Oxidative Damage in KGN Cells via miR-548m/FOXO3 Signaling.

J Cell Biochem

January 2025

Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine, The Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Gengnianchun (GNC) is a traditional remedy used for diminished ovarian reserve, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to explore these mechanisms in human granulosa-like cancer (KGN) cells pretreated with medicated rat serum (MRS) before HO exposure. MRS pretreatment significantly alleviated HO-induced cell damage, including improvements in cell viability, superoxide dismutase and GSH-Px activities, and Bcl-2 expression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to 20% of new mothers and has adverse consequences for the well-being of both mother and child. Exposure to stress during pregnancy as well as dysregulation in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) reward system and its upstream modulator oxytocin (OT) have been independently linked to PPD. However, no studies have directly examined DA or OT signaling in the postpartum brain after gestational stress.

Acute and chronic cannabis vapor exposure influences basal and stress-induced release of glucocorticoids in male and female rats.

Management of stress and anxiety is often listed as the primary motivation behind cannabis use. Human research has found that chronic cannabis use is associated with increased basal cortisol levels but blunted neuroendocrine responses to stress. Preclinical research has demonstrated mixed effects of Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; the psychoactive constituent of cannabis), much of which is suggestive of dose-dependent effects; however, the predominance of this work has employed an injection method to deliver cannabis.

High molecular weight hyaluronan (HMWH) inhibits hyperalgesia induced by diverse pronociceptive inflammatory mediators and their second messengers, in rats of both sexes. However, the hyperalgesia induced by ligands at 3 pattern recognition receptors, lipopolysaccharide (a toll-like receptor 4 agonist), lipoteichoic acid (a toll-like receptor 2/6 agonist), and nigericin (a NOD-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 activator), and oxaliplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy are only attenuated in males. After gonadectomy or intrathecal administration of an antisense to G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor 30 (GPER) mRNA, HMWH produces antihyperalgesia in females.

Background: A new pathophysiologic approach to evaluating hyponatremic patients identified the different causes of hyponatremia, including non-hyponatremic patients with renal salt wasting (RSW). RSW was considered a rare to nonexistent syndrome until we found 24 (38%) of 62 hyponatremic patients in a general medical ward to have RSW. We induced RSW in rats by injecting plasma from 18 AD patients suspected to have RSW.
