Background: Premature rupture of membrane (PROM) remains a problem in obstetrics, the mechanisms of PROM have not been clearly defined. Apoptosis is thought to play a key role in the mechanism, via caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways. Caspase-3, Apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), and anti-apoptosis B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) are hypothesized to be involved in PROM.

Objective: To determine the role of caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways in the mechanism of PROM.

Materials And Methods: This was a case-control study involving 42 pregnant women with gestational age between 20-42 wk. Participants were divided into the case group (with PROM) and control group (without PROM). Amniotic membranes were collected immediately after the delivery, and samples were taken from the site of membrane rupture. Immunohistochemical examination was done to determine the expression of Caspase-3, AIF, and Bcl-2.

Results: The expressions of Caspase-3 (OR = 9.75; 95% CI = 2.16-43.95; p = 0.001) and AIF (OR = 6.60; 95% CI = 1.48-29.36; p = 0.009) were significantly increased, whereas, Bcl-2 expressions (OR = 8.00; 95% CI = 1.79-35.74; p = 0.004) were significantly decreased in the case group.

Conclusion: High Caspase-3, AIF, and low Bcl-2 expression were the risk factors for PROM. Thus, it is evident that caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways are involved in the mechanism of PROM.

Modulation in cellular function and cell death through electrostimulation of intracellular organelles with the application of 50 ns pulsed electric field (nsPEF) have been investigated in breast cancerous MCF7 and normal MCF10A cells by developing a three-dimensional microelectrode device integrated with a fluorescence microscope. The findings revealed that nsPEF induced distinct effects on intracellular functions and dynamics in MCF7 and MCF10A cells. MCF10A cells exhibited significantly higher survivability than MCF7 cells, with different modes of cell death observed between them.

Experiments conducted on triple-negative breast cancer have shown that fucoidan from (FLt) exhibits cytotoxic and antitumor properties. However, further research is necessary to gain a complete understanding of its bioactivity and level of cytotoxicity. The cytotoxic effect of FLt was determined by the 2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

() is the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), a prevalent infectious disease affecting populations worldwide. A classic trait of TB pathology is the formation of granulomas, which wall off the pathogen, via the innate and adaptive immune systems. Some key players involved include tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), foamy macrophages, type I interferons (IFNs), and reactive oxygen species, which may also show overlap with cell death pathways.

Cell death plays a crucial role in various physiological and pathological processes. Until recently, programmed cell death was mainly attributed to caspase-dependent apoptosis. However, emerging evidence suggests that caspase-independent cell death (CICD) mechanisms also contribute significantly to cellular demise.

Ammonia-N poses a significant threat to aquatic animals. However, the mechanism of ROS production leading to DNA damage in hemocytes of crustaceans is still unclear. Additionally, the mechanism that cells respond to DNA damage by activating complex signaling networks has not been well studied.
