We report here an experimental setup to perform three-pulse pump-probe measurements over a wide wavelength and temperature range. By combining two pump pulses in the visible (650 nm-900 nm) and mid-IR (5 μm-20 μm) range, with a broadband supercontinuum white-light probe, our apparatus enables both the combined selective excitation of different material degrees of freedom and a full time-dependent reconstruction of the non-equilibrium dielectric function of the sample. We describe here the optical setup, the cryogenic sample environment, and the custom-made acquisition electronics capable of referenced single-pulse detection of broadband spectra at the maximum repetition rate of 50 kHz, achieving a sensitivity of the order of 10 over an integration time of 1 s. We demonstrate the performance of the setup by reporting data on a mid-IR pump, optical push, and broadband probe in a single crystal of BiSrYCaCuO across the superconducting and pseudogap phases.

The dynamics of excess protons in the protic ionic liquid (PIL) ethylammonium formate (EAF) have been investigated from femtoseconds to microseconds using visible pump mid-infrared probe spectroscopy. The pH jump following the visible photoexcitation of a photoacid (8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt, HPTS) results in proton transfer to the formate of the EAF. The proton transfer predominantly (∼70%) occurs over picoseconds through a preformed hydrogen-bonded tight complex between HPTS and EAF.

The purpose of this Technical Note is to introduce a surgical technique using a fluid pressure pump, mid-lateral portal, and radiofrequency ablation for visualization, assessment, and subsequent, accurate/adequate removal of patellofemoral articular lesions for the treatment of patellofemoral compartment pathology. With the patient in the supine position, and an inflated thigh tourniquet, standard lateral and medial portals are made. The medial-femoral compartment, notch, lateral-femoral compartment, and patellofemoral compartments are assessed.

Vibrational dynamics of the retinal all-trans to 13-cis photoisomerization in channelrhodopsin-1 from Chlamydomonas augustae (CaChR1) was investigated by femtosecond visible pump mid-IR probe spectroscopy. After photoexcitation, the transient infrared absorption of C-C stretching modes was detected. The formation of the 13-cis photoproduct marker band at 1193 cm(-1) was observed within the time resolution of 0.

In recent years visible pump/mid-infrared (IR) probe spectroscopy has established itself as a key technology to unravel structure-function relationships underlying the photo-dynamics of complex molecular systems. In this contribution we review the most important applications of mid-infrared absorption difference spectroscopy with sub-picosecond time-resolution to photosynthetic complexes. Considering several examples, such as energy transfer in photosynthetic antennas and electron transfer in reaction centers and even more intact structures, we show that the acquisition of ultrafast time resolved mid-IR spectra has led to new insights into the photo-dynamics of the considered systems and allows establishing a direct link between dynamics and structure, further strengthened by the possibility of investigating the protein response signal to the energy or electron transfer processes.
