We design a multi-layered solar spectral splitting planar concentrator for near infrared (NIR) light energy harvesting application. Each layer includes a silicon nitride based subwavelength diffraction grating on top of a glass substrate that is optimized to diffract the incoming solar radiation in a specific band from a broad spectral band (700-1400 nm in the NIR region) into guided modes propagating inside the glass substrate. The steep diffraction angle due to subwavelength grating results in concentrated light at the edge of each layer where it is then converted to electricity using a photovoltaic cell. The spectral splitting planar concentrator shows an overall NIR guiding efficiency of ∼18%, and power conversion efficiency of ∼11%. The design can be potentially used for building integrated photovoltaics application.

Far-Ultraviolet Plexciton Formation in Water-Covered Indium Clusters.

J Phys Chem Lett

Department of Nature and Environment, Faculty of Liberal Arts, The Open University of Japan, Chiba 261-8586, Japan.

In this work, we study the plexciton in the far-ultraviolet region formed between indium nanoclusters and water molecules. The indium clusters are fabricated on graphene under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and show a strong localized surface plasmon polariton (LSP) absorption band at 6-7 eV. Adsorption of water molecules onto the clusters at 115 K induces a band splitting larger than 1 eV, indicating a strong coupling between the LSP and water 4a ← 1b transition.

Expanding the spectral response of photocatalysts to facilitate overall water splitting (OWS) represents an effective approach for improving solar spectrum utilization efficiency. However, the majority of single-phase photocatalysts designed for OWS primarily respond to the ultraviolet region, which accounts for a small proportion of sunlight. Herein, we present a versatile strategy to achieve broad visible-light-responsive OWS photocatalysis dominated by direct ligand-to-cluster charge transfer (LCCT) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Broadband coherent Fourier scatterometry: A two-pulse approach.

Rev Sci Instrum

January 2025

Optics Research Group, Imaging Physics Department, Delft University of Technology, Van der Waalsweg 8, 2628 CH Delft, The Netherlands.

We demonstrate a broadband implementation of coherent Fourier scatterometry (CFS) using a supercontinuum source. Spectral information can be resolved by splitting the incident field into two pulses with a variable delay and interfering them at the detector after interaction with the sample, bearing similarities with Fourier-transform spectroscopy. By varying the time delay between the pulses, a collection of diffraction patterns is captured in the Fourier plane, thereby obtaining an interferogram for every camera pixel.

Molecular arrangement in the chiral smectic phases of the glassforming (S)-4'-(1-methylheptylcarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[7-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy) heptyl-1-oxy]benzoate is investigated by X-ray diffraction. An increased correlation length of the positional short-range order in the supercooled state agrees with the previous assumption of the hexatic smectic phase. However, the registered X-ray diffraction patterns are not typical for the hexatic phases.
