Presenting to our knowledge, for the first time in literature, a case report on the long term follow-up of an implant retained fixed prosthesis on free fibular reconstruction with a single piece zygomatic implant and single piece bicortical implant via a flapless approach and immediate functional rehabilitation. The technique involved the concept of "Remote Bone Anchorage" in conjunction with the union of grafted free fibula flap with the native mandible. It was facilitated with a single piece zygomatic implant engaged in the mandible and splinted with single piece implants on the grafted fibula as needed for prosthetic functional reconstruction. The author has reported a unique concept of immediate functional rehabilitation in the fibular graft therefore providing additional splinting of the vascularized free fibula to the mandible by splinting them with single piece zygomatic cortical implant.

: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a surgical technique for managing post-penetrating keratoplasty (PK) ectasia complicated by late endothelial failure (LEF). : A single-center pilot case series was conducted regarding consecutive patients affected by post-PK ectasia with late graft failure. Using a microkeratome, a single donor cornea was dissected to prepare a two-piece graft, comprising a larger anterior lamella made up of anterior stroma and a smaller posterior lamella made up of posterior stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium.

High-concentration hydrogels of κ-carrageenan prepared using subcritical water.

Carbohydr Polym

March 2025

Department of Material Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, Nishikyo, Kyoto 615-8510, Japan.

κ-Carrageenan hydrogels have been prepared at very high concentrations beyond the previous limit of conventional κ-carrageenan hydrogels. By dissolving κ-carrageenan using subcritical water at 150 °C, homogeneous translucent hydrogels have been obtained from 15 wt% to 40 wt%. The high-concentration hydrogels have exceptionally high Young's modulus (E) ranging 10-10 Pa and exhibit an unknown concentration (c)-dependence of E ∝ c.

Mouse models of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV).

Virology

December 2024

Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. Electronic address:

Infection with Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a prerequisite for the development of several human cancers, including Kaposi sarcoma and primary effusion lymphoma. Efficient long-term infection with KSHV and subsequent virally induced cell transformation is limited to humans, resulting in a lack of small animal models for KSHV-driven malignancies. Various attempts to create a mouse model for KSHV include infection of humanized mice, generating transgenic mice that ectopically express viral proteins, and grafting KSHV-infected tumor, primary, or immortalized cells onto immunodeficient mice.

Geometric Study and Clinical Case Series for Mandible Reconstruction With a Single-Piece Scapular Free Flap.

Head Neck

January 2025

Division of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Background: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) with simple cutting templates could help surgeons preoperatively plan scapula reconstructions in the vertical and horizontal orientations.

Methods: Virtually, eight defects were created in ten healthy mandibles and reconstructed with the subject-specific scapula vertically and horizontally. In the clinical series, 15 single-piece scapula mandible reconstructions planned with in-house VSP and guided with simple templates were compared with 15 freehand reconstructions.

Purpose: To evaluate demographic profile, risk factors and outcomes following intraocular lens (IOL) exchange surgery for late decentration of IOLs in the dead bag syndrome DESIGN: Prospective, interventional case series PARTICIPANTS: 46 eyes (43 patients) with late decentration/dislocation of IOLs and spontaneous posterior capsule rupture in a clear and relatively intact capsular bag. None of the eyes had significant zonular weakness.

Methods: Study conducted at Raghudeep Eye Hospital, India.
