In this study, porous aerogels were prepared by directional freeze-drying via cross-linking cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) (PMVEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The thermal properties and physical adsorption performance toward cation methylene blue dye of the obtained CNC aerogels were investigated. The maximum degradation temperature was increased from 324°C of CNCs to 355°C of cross-linked CNC aerogels. The dye adsorption isotherm results showed that the maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of CNC aerogels was 116.2 mg g, according to the Langmuir model, which was mainly due to the electrostatic attractions between negatively charged carboxyl groups or sulfonate groups on the CNC aerogles and cation MB molecules. The reusability test showed that the CNC aerogels contained the same dye adsorption performance in five adsorption/desorption cycles. Overall, this study described an ideal alternative for water purification with high dye adsorption capacity and enhanced physical performance.

Oriented-porous cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based aerogels excel in directional energy conversion but face reduced toughness, and triboelectric performance bottlenecks owing to the absence of electron acceptors. In this work, we crosslinked quaternary ammonium CNC with another flexible carboxymethyl agarose (AG-), via borate dynamic bonds, exploiting the electron-accepting traits of boron and electrophilic modifications to boost the mechanical and triboelectric performance of aerogels. These results demonstrate that the compressive resilience and modulus of CNC/AG aerogel are improved up to 70.

Structure color, arising from the interaction of light with regularly arranged sub-micrometer-sized structures, has spurred interest in sensor design. However, typical cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) photonic films derived from biomass, known for their sustainability and cost-effectiveness, often suffer from limited sensitivity and slow response times due to their dense structure. To address this challenge, we have utilized a unidirectional interlayer freezing-photopolymerization strategy to introduce porous structures into CNC photonic films without compromising their vibrant structural color.

2D layered metallic graphite composites are promising electromagnetic wave absorption materials (EWAMs) for their combined properties of abundant interlayer free spaces, rich metallic polarized sites, and high conductivity, but the controllable synthesis remains rather challenging. Herein, a dual-step redox engineering strategy is developed by employing cobalt boron imidazolate framework (Co-BIF) to construct 2D CoNi-alloy embedded B, N-doped carbon layers (2D-CNC) as a promising EWAM. In the first step, a chemical etching oxidation process on Co-BIF is used to obtain an optimized 2D-CoNi-layered double hydroxide (2D-CoNi-LDH) intermediate and in the second, high-temperature calcination reduction is implemented to modify graphitization of the degree of the 2D-CNC.

Cellulose aerogels have great prospects for noise reduction applications due to their sustainable value and superior 3D interconnected porous structures. The drying principle is a crucial factor in the preparation process for developing high-performance aerogels, particularly with respect to achieving high acoustic absorption properties. In this study, multifunctional cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) aerogels were conveniently prepared using two distinct freeze-drying principles: refrigerator conventional freezing (RCF) and liquid nitrogen unidirectional freezing (LnUF).
