The aggregation behaviour of a cationic surfactant in an aprotic ionic liquid has been explored. Prolate micelles are formed at low surfactant concentrations, while a lamellar lyotropic liquid crystal phase is formed at high surfactant concentrations.

Micellar catalysis is becoming an increasingly versatile tool to carry out a wide range of organic transformations using water as the reaction medium. The approach was recently found to be effective also in the case of water sensitive organics such as acyl chlorides. This finding is of great relevance for the manufacturing of challenging substrates such as the known iodinated contrast agent iopamidol, requiring the use of aprotic dipolar solvents (DMF, NMP, DMAc) in the key amidation step of an acyl dichloride intermediate with serinol.

Dispersing and stabilising proteins in ionic liquids (ILs) provides significant opportunities for green solvent-based biocatalysis, especially in industrial processes at elevated temperatures. While unmodified proteins undergo denaturation, their polymer-conjugated counterparts have been stabilised in neat ILs. The structure of ionic liquids (ILs) has an influence on their physiochemical properties, determining their performance as self-assembly media. In this study, we focus on the anion effect of aprotic ionic liquids (AILs). The aggregation behaviours of the cationic surfactant 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (CmimBr) have been investigated in the imidazolium AILs with the 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium cation and different anions, including nitrate, ethylsulfate, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide and tetrafluoroborate.

Despite significant research, the mechanistic nuances of unusual reactivity at the air-water interface, especially in microdroplets, remain elusive. The likely contributors include electric fields and partial solvation at the interface. To reveal these intricacies, we measure the frequency shift of a well-defined azide vibrational probe at the air-water interface, while independently controlling the surface charge density by introducing surfactants.
