The widespread metaphor "to gild the lily" suggests that people usually engage in superfluous behaviors. Understanding the cognitive mechanism underlying superfluous behaviors helps individuals to reduce possible waste and even disasters incurred by unnecessary actions. Here, we assumed that curiosity for new information partly pushes people to make needless efforts. This hypothesis was tested through three experiments. In three experiments, we found that when participants knew that expending more efforts than task requirements brought no better results, they still exerted various exploratory activities to fulfill curiosity. These results imply that the impulsion to satisfy the desire for information could partly drive individuals to indulge in unnecessary activities over mission demands. Present research improves the comprehension of irrational superfluous behavior and provides directions to reduce loss and waste caused by gilding the lily.

Background: Nearly 25% of opioid-related deaths are from prescribed opioids, and the exacerbation of the opioid epidemic by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic underscores the urgent need to address superfluous prescribing. Therefore, we sought to align local opioid prescribing practices with national guidelines in postoperative non-metastatic breast cancer patients.
Methods: A single-institution analysis included non-metastatic breast surgery patients treated between April 2020 and July 2021.

The article proposes a novel approach to assess rotor angle stability in microgrids by enhancing the Modified Galerkin Method (MGM), which is based on the Polynomial Approximation, using real-time RFID data acquisition. Due to their reliance on assumptions, traditional rotor angle stability methodologies frequently fail in online transient stability testing. MGM successfully captures the dynamic behavior of microgrids by approximating state variables using a sequence of polynomials and coefficients.

Lots of studies on eutrophication, but there is a lack of comprehensive research on the repair of multiple forms of nitrogen and phosphorus under combined heavy metals (HMs) pollution. This work investigated the various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water-sediment systems of eutrophic lakes with the application of biochar, Effective Microorganisms (EMs) and microplastics, aiming to deliberate the repair behavior of multiple forms of nitrogen/phosphorus and the integrated repairment of these nutrients and HMs in different remediations. For amended-groups, the application of biochar-supported EMs (BE) achieved the most desirable remediation for removing nitrogen, phosphorus and HMs in water and improved their stability in sediment due to the improved microbial activity and the developed biofilm system created by biochar.
