Food insecurity is a significant problem in many countries, including Australia. Consequently, food hubs, through which food is distributed using a supermarket style layout, have become an important new source of charity food provision. However, little is known about users' experiences. We draw on ethnographic research to understand the everyday experiences of people using South Australian food hubs. We suggest that attempts to produce a more dignified experience by creating a normalizing experience of shopping is not being achieved, because of the shame and stigma surrounding poverty, confusing operational processes, poor food quality, staff attitudes, and the disciplinary capacity of food hubs.

Heavy metal contamination in industrial-agricultural regions poses global challenges, yet comprehensive risk assessment models addressing both ecological and human health impacts are scarce. This study introduces a novel multi-compartmental risk assessment framework applied to the Saldha River region of Gazipur, Bangladesh, a rapidly industrialising area experiencing significant environmental stress. Here, we analysed eight heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, and Cd) in soil, wastewater, and plant samples (spinach, wild rice, and nut grass) via atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS).

Informal food markets, particularly those managed by (elderly) women in post-communist Eastern Europe, represent a biocultural phenomenon of profound significance since globalisation and increasingly strict legal frameworks often threaten these reservoirs of biocultural food heritage. In the fall of 2022 and 2023, a preliminary field study was conducted by visiting the informal markets of six Moldovan centres: Chișinău, Orhei, Bălți, Călărași, Comrat, and Taraclia, and conversing with approximately 40 mid-aged and elderly sellers. We argue that these markets are crucial in sustaining small-scale farming, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining a connection between urban communities and rural communities and, ultimately, between these rural citizens and their nature, keeping small-scale family farming and domestic traditional gastronomic activities alive.
