Fluorophores with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics applied in bioimaging have attracted more and more attention in recent years. In this work, a series of flavanone compounds with AIEE characteristics was developed and applied to fluorescence imaging of mitochondria and zebrafish. The compounds were readily prepared by the thermal dehydration of chalcone that was obtained by the reaction of -hydroxyacetophenone and benzaldehyde. Two of these compounds showed significant AIEE characteristics by fluorescence performance experiments, including optical spectra, fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yield (φ), fluorescence lifetime, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with traditional organic fluorescent dyes, these compounds have high fluorescence emission and high fluorescence quantum yield in solid or aggregated state, which overcomes the shortcoming of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). More importantly, the two compounds exhibited low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility in A549 lung cells at the experimental concentration range and they specifically targeted mitochondria, which make it of great potential use in mitochondria labeling. In addition, they were embryonic membrane permeable and had different affinities for different tissues and organs of zebrafish, but mainly distributed in the digestive system, providing a basis for the application of such compounds in bioimaging. These AIEE compounds with superior properties could be of great potential use in mitochondria imaging and other in vivo studies.

Bile salts (BS) are naturally occurring steroidal biosurfactants. The ease of functionalization of BSs has boosted their use as inexpensive building blocks for the fabrication of a broad set of value-added soft functional materials. In the present work, three fluorescent bile acid (FBA) derivatives have been synthesized by conjugating anthracene at the side chain of lithocholic acid, deoxycholic acid, and cholic acid to understand the effect of the nature of the steroid nucleus on their physicochemical properties.

Organic luminescent materials having photoluminescence in their solid state have become emerging trends in chemistry, materials science, and biology due to their versatile potential applications. In the present contribution, we have introduced some methylenebis(4,1-phenylene) electron donor-acceptor-based fashionable solid-state fluorescent molecules, MBA, MBB, and MBH, having exciting photoluminescence characteristics in their solid and aggregate states. Interestingly, all probes exhibited a compelling aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) phenomenon in aqueous media.

Nanomaterials that respond to intracellular signals, such as pH, have the potential for many biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, because the assembly/disassembly process can be tailored to respond to a stimulus characteristic of a specific subcellular location. In this work, two rhodamine-peptides that form stable nanotubes at physiological pH but dissociate into highly fluorescent monomers within the acidified interior of endosomal/lysosomal cellular compartments have been developed. The rhodamine dipeptide conjugates, NH-KK(RhB)-NH () and NH-EK(RhB)-NH () with rhodamine B chromophores appended at the ε-amino position of a lysine residue, were shown to assemble into well-defined nanotubes at pH values above ∼4-5 and to dissociate into a fluorescent monomer state at lower pH values.

The amplification of asymmetry in supramolecular polymers has recently garnered significant attention. While asymmetry amplification has predominantly been explored under thermodynamic conditions, the kinetic aspect of this process unveils intriguing observations, yet is scarcely reported in the literature. Herein, drawing inspiration from macromolecular systems, we propose a novel strategy for enhancing asymmetry in supramolecular polymers through a seed-induced supramolecular polymerization approach under kinetic conditions, employing a naphthalene diimide-derived monomer (ANSG) for template-induced supramolecular polymerization, utilizing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and pyrophosphate (PPi) as templates.

This study explores the synthesis and characterization of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE)-active gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), focusing on their near-infrared luminescence properties and potential applications in biological imaging. These AIEE-active AuNCs were synthesized via the NaBH-mediated reduction of HAuCl in the presence of peptides. We systematically investigated the influence of the peptide sequence on the optical features of the AuNCs, highlighting the role of glutamic acid in enhancing their quantum yield (QY).
