The aim of our study was to develop a novel method for nanocarriers' preparation as a fluorine magnetic resonance imaging (F MRI)-detectable drug delivery system. The novelty of the proposed approach is based on the application of fluorinated polyelectrolyte Nafion as a contrast agent since typical MRI contrast agents are based on paramagnetic gadolinium or ferro/superparamagnetic iron oxide compounds. An advantage of using an F-based tracer comes from the fact that the F image is detected at a different resonance frequency than the H image. In addition, the close to zero natural concentration of F nuclei in the human body makes fluorine atoms a promising MRI marker without any natural background signal. That creates the opportunity to localize and identify only exogenous fluorinated compounds with 100% specificity. The nanocarriers were formed by the deposition of polyelectrolytes on nanoemulsion droplets via the layer-by-layer technique with the saturation approach. The polyelectrolyte multilayer shell was composed of Nafion, the fluorinated ionic polymer used for labeling by F nuclei, and poly-l-lysine (PLL). The surface of such prepared nanocarriers was further pegylated by adsorption of pegylated polyanion, poly-l-glutamic acid (PGA). The F MRI-detectable hydrophobic nanocarriers with an average size of 170 nm and a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio have been developed and optimized to be used for passive tumor targeting and drug delivery.

Considering the widespreadly use, large consumption, and serious environmental and health threats of phenylpyrazole insecticides (PPIs), development of a selective and sensitive method for accurate detection of their residuals in food samples is of great significance and challenging. Herein, depending on the hydrophobic and F-containing characteristics of PPIs, a novel fluorinated magnetic microporous organic network (FMMON) was designed and prepared for efficient and selective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of two typical PPIs (fipronil and ethiprole) from milk and egg samples before the HPLC-UV determination. FMMON owned large specific surface area, multiple interaction sites, excellent magnetic separation performance and stability and exhibited good extraction and selectivity for fipronil and ethiprole through the specific F-F, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and π-π interactions.

Enterohepatic circulation (EHC) is a critical biological process for the normal regulation of many endogenous biomolecules and the increased retention of various exogenous substances. The status of EHC is closely related to the ordinary functioning of several digestive organs. However, it remains a challenge to achieve in vivo real-time visualization of this process.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a widely distributed and persistent organic pollutant, is known to cause immune dysfunction. In a previous study, we reported that PFOS modestly increases mast cell activation. However, its effects on FcεRI (a high-affinity IgE receptor)-mediated mast cell activation, a pivotal process in inflammatory allergic reactions and innate immunity, have not been clearly demonstrated.

Urinalysis, as a non-invasive and efficient diagnostic method, is very important but faces great challenges due to the complex compositions of urine and limited naturally occurring biomarkers for diseases. Herein, by leveraging the intrinsic absence of endogenous fluorinated interference, a strategy with the enzymatically activated assembly of synthetic fluorinated peptide for cholestatic liver injury (CLI) diagnosis and treatment through F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) urinalysis and efficient drug retention is developed. Specifically, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), overexpressed in the liver of CLI mice, triggers the assembly of fluorinated peptide, thus, directing the traffic and dynamic distribution of the synthetic biomarkers after administration, whereas CLI mice display much slower clearance of peptides through urine as compared with healthy counterparts.

This study tackles the challenge of enantiodifferentiation of nitrile compounds, which is typically difficult to resolve using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) due to the significant distance between the chiral center and the nitrogen atom involved in molecular interactions. We have developed novel chiral F-labeled probes, each featuring two chiral centers, to exploit the "match-mismatch" effect, thereby enhancing enantiodiscrimination. This strategy effectively differentiates chiral analytes with quaternary chiral carbon centers as well as those with similar substituents at the chiral center.
