AI Article Synopsis

  • The northern bobwhite quail, a game bird, is facing a population decline throughout its habitat.
  • There is a lack of specific hematologic data for this species, especially for juvenile quail, prompting a study on 49-day-old captive-raised quail to establish reference blood values.
  • The study recorded various blood parameters, revealing that the quail were mostly lymphocytic but exhibited significant variability, and it noted discrepancies in white blood cell count methods.

Article Abstract

The northern bobwhite quail () is a game bird experiencing decline throughout much of its range. There are limited species-specific and age-specific hematologic data for bobwhite quail. Complete blood cell counts in eighteen 49-day-old captive-raised quail of unverified sex were used to contribute data to reference intervals for the species as juvenile animals. Values for packed cell volumes, total solids, red and white blood cell counts, and white cell differential calculations were recorded for each animal. Bobwhite quail of this age were found to be primarily lymphocytic, but considerable variability was observed. White blood cell counts were obtained by estimates from blood smears and Phloxine B stain. White blood cell counts performed with ×1000 magnification did not compare well with other white blood cell methods, including Phloxine B stain.

The worldwide epidemic of obesity has drastically worsened with the increase in more sedentary lifestyles and increased consumption of fatty foods. Increased blood free fatty acids (FFAs), often observed in obesity, leads to impaired insulin action, and promotes the development of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). JNK, IKK-NF-κB, and STAT3 are known to be involved in skeletal muscle insulin resistance.

Exercising regularly promotes health, but these benefits are complicated by acute inflammation induced by exercise. A potential source of inflammation is cell-free DNA (cfDNA), yet the cellular origins, molecular causes, and immune system interactions of exercise-induced cfDNA are unclear. To study these, 10 healthy individuals were randomized to a 12-wk exercise program of either high-intensity tactical training (HITT) or traditional moderate-intensity training (TRAD).

The scarcity of effective neuroprotective agents and the presence of blood-brain barrier (BBB)-mediated extremely inefficient intracerebral drug delivery are predominant obstacles to the treatment of cerebral ischemic stroke (CIS). Herein, ROS-responsive borneol-based amphiphilic polymeric NPs are constructed by using traditional Chinese medicine borneol as functional blocks that served as surface brain-targeting ligand, inner hydrophobic core for efficient drug loading of membrane-permeable calcium chelator BAPTA-AM, and neuroprotective structural component. In MCAO mice, the nanoformulation (polymer: 3.

Background: Platelet recovery was an important prognostic indicator in severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). This study focused on risk factors affecting platelet recovery in surviving SFTS patients, which can assist clinicians in the early screening of patients associated with a greater risk of mortality.

Method: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of SFTS patients admitted to Yantai Qishan Hospital throughout 2023.
