Composite solid surfaces with high content of functional groups (FGs) are useful materials in different types of applications requiring stimuli-responsive "hard/soft" architectures, their improved properties rising from the combination of organic-inorganic parts. Among different types of weak polyelectrolytes, poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) is of great interest in the construction of composite systems with thin layer-by-layer (LbL) organic films due to the large number of amino groups per unit mass of polymer. Herein, the spherical silica microparticles were modified with linear (L) or branched (B) PEI chains using LbL deposition of a copper complex (PEIL-Cu or PEIB-Cu) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), glutaraldehyde selective cross-linking, followed by copper and PAA extraction from the multilayer. The newly formed silica/(PEIL) and silica/(PEIB) composites were used in batch and column sorption/desorption experiments of four heavy metal ions (Cu, Ni, Co, and Cd). In noncompetitive conditions ([FG]/Σ[M] > 9), all heavy metal ions were retained on composites, demonstrating the potential application of the prepared functional microparticles in surface water treatment. However, in competitive conditions ([FG]/Σ[M] < 9), only Cu is sorbed in high amount (∼2.5 mmol·g PEI) on composites, with simultaneous displacement of already sorbed ions, demonstrating the solid-phase extraction and chromatographic properties of the synthesized silica/(PEIL) and silica/(PEIB) composites.

Several studies have reported associations between specific heavy metals and essential trace elements and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, there is limited understanding of the relationships between trace elements and AMI in real-life co-exposure scenarios, where multiple elements may interact simultaneously. This cross-sectional study measured serum levels of 56 trace elements using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Recently, the scale and frequency of harmful algae blooms (HABs) have gradually increased, posing a serious threat to human health, marine ecosystems and economic development. For early warning, a method is required that can quickly detect and monitor microalgae. It is proposed to use aptamer targeted to Prorocentrum minimum, along with exonuclease III (Exo III), gold nanoparticles, target single-stranded DNA and hairpin structure probe to construct a new method, i.

Purpose Of Review: Using advanced bibliometric analysis, we systematically mapped the most current literature on urban air pollution and neurodevelopmental conditions to identify key patterns and associations. Here, we review the findings from the broader literature by discussing a distilled, validated subset of 44 representative studies.

Recent Findings: Literature highlights a complex relationship between environmental toxins, neurodevelopmental disorders in children, and neurobehavioral pathways involving oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and protein aggregation.

This study investigated the effects of fine-sized pork bone biochar particles on remediating As-contaminated soil and alleviating associated phytotoxicity to rice in 50-day short-term and 120-day full-life-cycle pot experiments. The addition of micro-nanostructured pork bone biochar (BC) pyrolyzed at 400 and 600 °C (BC400 and BC600) significantly increased the As-treated shoot and root fresh weight by 24.4-77.

Silicosis represents a formidable occupational lung pathology precipitated by the pulmonary assimilation of respirable crystalline silica particulates. This condition engenders a cascade of cellular oxidative stress via the activation of bioavailable silica, culminating in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Such oxidative mechanisms lead to irrevocable pulmonary impairment.
