AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

The interactive effects of irradiance and N on growth of young tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were studied. Plants were grown at 70 or 300 μmol photons m s, hereafter referred to as 'low' and 'high' irradiance, and at a range of exponential N supply rates (70-370 mg g d) or at a constant concentration in the nutrient solution of 12 mM NO3. At both irradiance levels, leaf area ratio was more important than net assimilation rate (NAR) in explaining effects of N on growth at mild N limitation. However, at severe N limitation, NAR became the most important parameter, as indicated by calculated growth response coefficients. Furthermore, this study shows that N supply and growth irradiance interacted strongly. The decrease of specific leaf area with increasing N limitation and increasing growth irradiance correlated with increasing leaf dry mass percentage and starch concentration. Furthermore, at low irradiance, plants partitioned more dry mass to the stem. Dry mass partitioning to roots increased with decreasing plant N concentration, and this relation appeared to be independent of irradiance. Shading increased plant N concentration and decreased dry mass partitioning to roots. Also, the relationship between plant N concentration and N partitioning to different plant organs was largely independent of growth irradiance.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) Region is home to the most acute economic, resource, and environmental conflicts in the Bohai Sea region, and the rivers entering the sea carry abundant total nitrogen (TN) input into the Bohai Bay, which is the main land-based input causing eutrophication of the bay. The Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region was divided into 112 (2018-2019) and 187 (2020-2022) control units, and the spatial and temporal variations in TN concentration in the surface water of the Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region were systematically analyzed from 2018 to 2022 by combining the Euclidean distance analysis method and the K-means clustering analysis method. The results showed that the annual average concentration of TN in the region showed a trend of decreasing (2018-2020) and then increasing (2021-2022), in which the concentration of TN increased significantly from June 2021 to June 2022.

Electronic address:

The hyperaccumulating ecotype Sedum alfredii Hance is one of few Cd hyperaccumulators with Cd contents in leaves and stems up to 9000 mg/kg (dry weight, DW) and 6500 mg/kg (DW) respectively without displaying significant toxicity symptoms as reported in 2004. Numerous studies have been conducted to uncover the mystery of its hypertolerance and hyperaccumulation using high-throughput sequencing, biochemical and molecular techniques, mainly pointing to the root-microorganism interaction, restrained Cd storage in roots, efficient root-shoot translocation, effective cellular detoxification, and phloem-mediated metal remobilization. This also encourages studies on functional genes involved in metal transport, antioxidant, transcription regulation and stress response, providing candidates for genetic modification.

Electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling and dumpsite processes are recognized as significant sources of chlorinated paraffin (CP) exposure. This study aims to investigate the environmental occurrence and distribution of polychlorinated alkanes (PCAs-C), specifically in soil and outdoor dust samples collected from e-waste dumpsites and automobile dismantling and resale sites in Nigeria. The results revealed a widespread occurrence of PCAs across all sampled locations.
