Thanks to impressive advances in the field of oncology over the last 30 years, there has been a significant rise in cancer survivors. Nowadays, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in this patient population. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major problem due to shared risk factors, an aging population and in many cases induced and/or accelerated atherosclerosis by antitumoral treatment during and even decades after the end of cancer therapy.

Over the past decade, genome-scale molecular profiling of large childhood cancer survivorship cohorts has led to unprecedented advances in our understanding of the genetic and epigenetic bases of therapy-related adverse health outcomes in this vulnerable population. To facilitate the integration of knowledge generated from these studies into formulating next-generation precision care for survivors of childhood cancer, we summarize key findings of genetic and epigenetic association studies of long-term therapy-related adverse effects including subsequent neoplasms and cardiomyopathies among others. We also discuss therapy-related genotoxicities including clonal haematopoiesis and DNA methylation, which may underlie accelerated molecular ageing.

Most studies have suggested that end-stage renal disease causes carcinogenesis and promotes tumor development; however, this theory remains questionable.

The aim of this narrative review was to discuss the literature on β-lactam antibiotic-associated hypokalemia, a potentially life-threatening electrolyte disorder. The PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases were searched for articles published between 1965 and 2023, using the following terms: 'hypokalemia' OR 'potassium loss' OR 'potassium deficiency' AND 'beta-lactams' OR 'penicillin' OR 'penicillin G' OR 'cephalosporins' OR 'ceftazidime' OR 'ceftriaxone' OR 'flucloxacillin' OR 'carbapenems' OR 'meropenem' OR 'imipenem' OR 'cefiderocol' OR 'azlocillin' OR 'ticarcillin'. Additional search terms were 'hypokalemia' AND 'epidemiology' AND 'ICU' OR 'intensive care unit' OR 'ER' OR 'emergency department' OR 'ambulatory' OR 'old' OR 'ageing population', and experimental (animal-based) studies were excluded.
