Numerous studies focused on the human exposure to plasticizers via dermal contact; however, the percutaneous penetration of plasticizers was seldom considered in exposure assessment. In the present study, skin wipes of palms, back-of-hands, and forehead were collected from 114 participants (ages: 18-27). There was no significant difference between the levels of phthalates from palms and back-of-hand, while all phthalates collected from the forehead were significantly higher than those from palms and back-of-hand ( < 0.001); di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate levels were substantially higher than other detected phthalates followed by di(-butyl)phthalate and di(isobutyl)phthalate (DiBP), and for alternative plasticizers, bis-2-ethylhexyl terephthalate levels were substantially higher than acetyltributyl citrate and bis-2-ethylhexyladipate. Skin permeation and metabolism of phthalates was assessed using human skin equivalent models. The permeability coefficient () values of phthalates were significantly negatively correlated with their log octanol-water partition coefficient (log ), while a significantly positive correlation was found between the log and the cumulative amounts of phthalates in the cells. The proportion of phthalate intake via dermal exposure to skin wipes ranges from 1.3% (for dimethyl phthalate) to 8.6% (for DiBP) and suggests that dermal absorption is a significant route for adult phthalate exposure.

Cloth versus disposable diapers: an exploratory study on family habits.

J Pediatr (Rio J)

December 2024

Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Departamento de Pediatria, Divisão de Dermatologia Pediátrica, Curitiba, Brazil.

Objective: To describe features and habits of diaper area care and compare the frequency of diaper dermatitis in infants using cloth diapers with those using disposable diapers.

Methods: Questionnaires were administered to families with infants who had not started potty training, to assess the frequency of diaper rash in two groups: babies who use exclusively cloth diapers (CD), and others with exclusively disposable diapers (DD). The hygiene methods of the perineal region and the skin lesions frequency were evaluated.

This work investigated the application of a reporter gene bioassay in assessing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure in trainee firefighters. In the PAH CALUX bioassay, the PAH-induced activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in a reporter cell line is recorded by increased luminescence. A repeated measurement study was performed, collecting urine and skin wipe samples at two baseline sessions (spring and autumn) and after three firefighting sessions: one with wood fuel, one with gas fuel, and one without fire.

Firefighter occupational exposures were categorized as a class 1 (known) carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2022. As a result, firefighters have become heavily focused on identifying effective and easy to implement decontamination strategies to reduce their chemical exposures. Skin decontamination using wipes post-exposure is one decontamination strategy that every firefighter has available to them.

Human bare and clothing-covered skin exposure to chlorinated paraffins for the general populations: Exposure pattern differential and significance of indirect dermal exposure via clothing-to-skin transport.

Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed human exposure to short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) through skin contact and hand-to-mouth activities by analyzing wipes from the faces, arms, hands, and feet of 30 volunteers.
  • The findings showed that hands had the highest concentrations of these compounds, suggesting that direct contact with indoor surfaces plays a significant role in skin contamination.
  • Notably, the study revealed that dermal absorption rates were much higher than those from oral ingestion, indicating that skin contact is a major exposure route for these chemicals in humans.

Local keratinocyte-nociceptor interactions enhance obesity-mediated small fiber neuropathy via NGF-TrkA-PI3K signaling axis.

The pathology of diabetic small fiber neuropathy, characterized by neuropathic pain and axon degeneration, develops locally within the skin during the stages of obesity and pre-diabetes. However, the initiation and progression of morphological and functional abnormalities in skin sensory nerves remains elusive. To address this, we utilized ear skin from mice with diet-induced obesity (DIO), the mouse models for obesity and pre-type 2 diabetes.
