The Latitude Hypothesis may explain seasonal variation in occurrence of flu and influenza-like illness, including SARS-CoV-2. We focus on one variable, vitamin D adequacy in the general population, and consider statistics of two sub-populations to propose a possible treatment to improve outcomes.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. We studied geographic patterns of functional and phylogenetic niche breadth of 194 flea species. Niche breadth was measured as the functional and phylogenetic diversity and uniqueness of the assemblages of small mammal hosts exploited by these fleas.We asked (a) whether the relationships between niche breadth and geographic range size conform to the 'niche breadth hypothesis', predicting positive correlations, and (b) whether variation of niche breadth along the latitudinal position of geographic range conforms to the 'niche breadth-latitude hypothesis', predicting narrower niche breadth at lower latitudes.

Little is known about the structure of plant communities across the vast Tibetan Plateau, which supports at least 12,000 species of alpine vascular plants including over 2000 endemics. We recorded species abundance in 485 sites stretching across 6000 km of the plateau. At each site, species abundance was measured in three quadrats that were 40 m apart, allowing us to quantify local β-diversity within the site.

Admixture is the exchange of genetic variation between differentiated demes, resulting in ancestry within a population coalescing in multiple ancestral source populations. Low-latitude killer whales (Orcinus orca) populations typically have higher genetic diversity than those in more densely populated, high productivity and high-latitude regions. This has been hypothesized to be due to episodic admixture between populations with distinct genetic backgrounds.

Numerous studies over the past century have reported an inverse correlation between lifetime solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) exposure and all-cancer incidence and mortality. For decades, this relationship was hypothesized to reflect the action of photosynthesized vitamin D, though subsequent clinical trials have failed to demonstrate the expected anti-cancer properties. Rather than a consequence of vitamin D, I hypothesize that this inverse correlation reflects the immune stimulatory action of UV-derived skin neoantigens.
