A headspace microextraction by packed sorbent technique (HS-MEPS) was developed that is assisted by cooling the extraction phase and, in the same time, heating the sample matrix. The innovated cooling assisted HS-MEPS system was optimized for the extraction and HPLC determination of volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in solid samples. Amino ethyl-functionalized SBA-15 was used as a nanoporous sorbent for packing the conical hub of the MEPS syringe. For efficient extraction of PAHs, several parameters such as the nature and mass of sorbent, eluent type, elution volume, extraction temperature and number of draw-eject cycles of the syringe were studied and optimized. Under the optimal experimental conditions, only 2 mg of the sorbent was sufficient by applying a temperature of 0 °C to the sorbent while the sample was heated up to 150 °C. Linear calibration curves (R > 0.95) were obtained for all the studied PAHs and their quantitation limits were in the range of 0.042-0.25 ng g. The method was successfully applied to the extraction and HPLC analysis of PAHs in some polluted soil samples.

The increasing demand for energy in cooling systems due to global warming presents a significant challenge. Conventional air-conditioning methods exacerbate climate change by contributing to heightened carbon emissions. Glass facades, renowned in modern architecture for their versatility and aesthetic appeal, inadvertently trap solar radiation, resulting in heat buildup and the greenhouse effect.

Photoinduced Fröhlich Interaction-Driven Distinct Electron- and Hole-Polaron Behaviors in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites by Ultrafast Terahertz Probes.

The formation of large polarons resulting from the Fröhlich coupling of photogenerated carriers with the polarized crystal lattice is considered crucial in shaping the outstanding optoelectronic properties in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite crystals. Until now, the initial polaron dynamics after photoexcitation have remained elusive in the hybrid perovskite system. Here, based on the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and optical-pump terahertz probe, we access the nature of interplay between photoexcited unbound charge carriers and optical phonons in MAPbBr within the initial 5 ps after excitation and have demonstrated the simultaneous existence of both electron- and hole-polarons, together with the photogenerated carrier dynamic process.

There are increasing global efforts and initiatives aiming to tackle climate change and mitigate its impacts via natural climate solutions (NCS). Wetlands have been considered effective NCS given their capacity to sequester and retain atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO) while also providing a myriad of other ecosystem functions that can assist in mitigating the impacts of climate change. However, wetlands have a dual impact on climate, influencing the atmospheric concentrations of both CO and methane (CH).

Objectives: This work highlights the methods used to develop a multi-pulse 1726 nm laser system combined with bulk air-cooling for selective sebaceous gland (SG) photothermolysis using thermal imaging and software algorithms. This approach enables treating to a desired tissue temperature and depth to provide a safe, effective, reproducible, and durable treatment of acne.

Methods: We designed and built a 1726 nm laser system with a 40 W maximum power output, a highly controlled air-cooling device, and a thermal camera in the handpiece, which permits real-time temperature monitoring of the epidermis.

The paper starts by describing the manufacturing process of cups thermoformed from extruded foils of 80% recycled PET (80r-PET), which comprises heating, hot deep drawing and cooling. The 80r-PET foils were heated up to 120 °C, at heating rates of the order of hundreds °C/min, and deep drawn with multiple punchers, having a depth-to-width ratio exceeding 1:1. After puncher-assisted deformation, the cups were air blown away from the punchers, thus being "frozen" in the deformed state.
