Herein, we develop various iridium based catalysts using titania, zirconia and ceria as a supporting material (Ir/MO; M = Ce, Ti, Zr) for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To investigate their electrocatalytic activities, glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were modified by drop casting the catalyst ink without using any binder. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) was used to test their electrocatalytic activities in 0.5 M HSO solution. Among these catalysts, Ir/CeO was found to exhibit excellent activity and superior stability. According to the polarization curves, onset potential (η) and overpotential (η@10 mA.cm) of Ir/CeO were found as -13 and -23 mV, respectively, which are lower than the values obtained for commercial 10% Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, Ir/CeO provides low Tafel slope (38.7 mV.dec), high turnover frequency (1.95 @100 mV) and high exchange current density (2.69 mA.cm) values. In addition, Ir/CeO shows superior stability even after 20 000 cycle in acidic environment (pH = 0.3) which makes Ir/CeO (2.44 wt% Ir) as a promising alternative electrocatalyst for HER.

The development of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminophores is a fascinating and promising topic in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) bioanalysis. Herein, the AIE-active but water-insoluble [Ir(bt)₂(acac)] (bt = 2-phenylbenzothiazole, acac = acetylacetonate) was encapsulated within poly(styrene-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) using a simple nanoprecipitation method. This encapsulation strategy could effectively limit the free motion of Ir(bt)₂(acac) and trigger the aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) effect.

Glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in maintaining redox homeostasis in biological systems. Development of reliable glutathione sensors is of great significance to better understand the role of biomolecules in living cells and organisms. Based on the advantages of the photophysical properties of iridium complexes, we proposed a "turn-on" phosphorescent sensor.

Transition metal complexes: next-generation photosensitizers for combating Gram-positive bacteria.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive bacterial infections poses a significant threat to public health, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. A photosensitizer (PS) can convert energy from absorbed photon into reactive oxygen species (ROS) for damaging bacteria. This photoinactivation action bypassing conventional antibiotic mechanism is less prone to resistance development, making antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) highly efficient in combating Gram-positive bacteria.

This review highlights how a Ir(III) and Ru(II) coordination complexes can change theirs cytotoxic activity by interacting with a biomolecules such as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), human albumins (HSA), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), and glutathione (GSH). We have selected biomolecules (DNA, NADH, GSH, and HSA) based on their significant biological roles and importance in cellular processes. Moreover, this review may provide useful information for the development of new half-sandwich Ir(III) and Ru(II) complexes with desired properties and relevant biological activities.

Recently, cobalt-based oxides have received considerable attention as an alternative to expensive and scarce iridium for catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under acidic conditions. Although the reported materials demonstrate promising durability, they are not entirely intact, calling for fundamental research efforts to understand the processes governing the degradation of such catalysts. To this end, this work studies the dissolution mechanism of a model CoO porous catalyst under different electrochemical conditions using online inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (online ICP-MS), identical location scanning transmission electron microscopy (IL-STEM), and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS).
