Article Abstract

This study validated the analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in shellfish and cephalopods using a gas chromatograph equipped with a mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), and monitored residual pesticide levels. The QuEChERS method was used to analyze OCPs and was validated by checking the linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), accuracy, and precision. and were purchased from four cities in the South Korean peninsula. The LOD values were 0.10-0.80 ng/g in shellfish and 0.21-0.77 ng/g in cephalopods, while the LOQ values were 0.31-2.41 ng/g in shellfish and 0.63-2.33 ng/g in cephalopods. Accuracy ranged from 83.5 to 117.4% and 79.8 to 118.4%, and precision ranged from 0.3 to 27.5% and 1.2 to 27.9%, in shellfish and cephalopods, respectively, conforming to the Codex Alimentarius Commission guidelines. Although residual OCP levels were below detection limits, the QuEChERS method may be effective for analyzing the OCPs in shellfish and cephalopods.

Cephalopods are economically and ecologically important species across the world, yet information linking physiological stress and associated immunological responses is limited in the current literature. Here, the effects of exhaustive exercise in a holobenthic octopus species, Octopus pallidus, were examined by evaluating immunological parameters. In whole haemolymph, the pH and refractive index were measured.

Article Synopsis
  • Marine pollutants, particularly potentially toxic elements (PTEs), are becoming a major threat to the Beibu Gulf's environment and its fishery resources due to their harmful effects and ability to accumulate in organisms.
  • A study collected 18 species of seafood invertebrates from the Gulf and analyzed the levels of nine PTEs, finding that most were within safety limits, except for arsenic (As).
  • The research indicated a significant increase in the concentration of As and chromium (Cr) at higher trophic levels, and it was determined that eating cephalopod, shellfish, and sea cucumber carries a greater risk to human health compared to shrimp and crab.

Article Synopsis
  • Octopus sinensis is a significant species in aquaculture, particularly in southern China, and has a well-documented immune system that helps resist pathogens.
  • Five TRAF genes (OsTRAF2 to OsTRAF7) were identified, each varying in size and showing different chromosome locations, indicating their role in the innate immune response.
  • Analysis revealed that these genes are highly expressed in specific organs and their expression increases in response to immune challenges, suggesting they are vital for immune function in this species.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a class of conserved pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that are crucial for initiating the innate immune response and aiding in the clearance of pathogenic organisms. Many studies have identified TLR4 as a distinctive member of the TLR family, capable of activating both the Myeloid differentiation factor 88-dependent signaling pathway (MyD88-dependent) and the TIR-domain-containing adaptor inducing IFN-β dependent signaling pathway (TRIF-dependent). Nevertheless, the role of TLR4 in Cephalopoda is still largely unexplored.

The hepatopancreas is the biggest digestive organ in Amphioctopus fangsiao (A. fangsiao), but also undertakes critical functions like detoxification and immune defense. Generally, pathogenic bacteria or endotoxin from the gut microbiota would be arrested and detoxified in the hepatopancreas, which could be accompanied by the inevitable immune responses.
