How Biofilm Growth Affects -Host Interactions.

Front Microbiol

Published: June 2020

spp. proliferate as surface-associated biofilms in a variety of clinical niches. These biofilms can be extremely difficult to eradicate in healthcare settings. Cells within biofilm communities grow as aggregates and produce a protective extracellular matrix, properties that impact the ability of the host to respond to infection. Cells that disperse from biofilms display a phenotype of enhanced pathogenicity. In this review, we highlight host-biofilm interactions for , focusing on how biofilm formation influences innate immune responses.

The therapeutic effect and mechanism of carnosic acid in Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis.

Exp Eye Res

March 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, No. 16 Jiangsu Road, Qingdao, Shandong Province, 266003, China. Electronic address:

Fungal keratitis is a vision-threatening corneal infectious disease. However, clinically therapeutic medicines cannot attain ideal efficacy due to limited control of fungal virulence and excessive inflammatory response. Carnosic acid (CA) is a phenolic diterpene, which has been reported to have multiple abilities including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Background: As a quorum sensing system, LuxS/AI-2 is closely associated with bacterial growth, biofilm formation, and virulence. As yet, it is not known how the luxS is associated with a diverse array of physiological activities in non- carbapenemase producing carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli (non-CP-CREC). The purpose of this study is to explore the characterization of AI-2/LuxS quorum sensing system in antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity of non-CP-CREC.

The use of commercial disinfectant in combination with other antimicrobial agent such as ZnO nanoparticles to improve disinfection efficacy could be a promising strategy in the control of pathogenic bacteria. In this context, the aim of study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of sodium hypochlorite disinfectant, ZnO nanoparticles as well as Mn-, Ce-, and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles (doping concentrations 10%, 20%, 30%) against gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium, and gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes using the broth microdilution method CLSI M07-A10, while the checkerboard microdilution method was carried out to assess the type interaction of sodium hypochlorite in combination with pure ZnO nanoparticles. The results specified that ZnO nanoparticles were agents that required higher concentrations to inhibit bacterial growth than sodium hypochlorite, whereby a synergistic effect was achieved in their combination.
